42 hours and 2700 miles of driving later and we pulled into SPI at noon today. What a long long long drive across AZ, NM, and west Texas. I'm pretty sure God had to make Texas as big as it is to be able to hold all of the tumbleweeds he couldn't find any place else for. All of that flat dry desert really makes you appreciate the trees and scenery of the Gorge.
Got checked in to our place, headed to the flats, pulled in between a couple of cars and the first two people we talk to are from the NW. Travis with North kites and a couple from Vancouver who I can't recall their names at the moment (sorry!). It's really cool that every trip we've made kiting in the last two years we've run into somebody from near home who knows somebody we know or has kited our favorite spots. It's fun comparing notes on kite trips, finding out where people have escaped to for the winter, where they're going next, and to just hear people's excitement for the sport.
The wind was light so no kiting today for us but we got all of the boards put together and things unpacked. Sounds like we should be in business tomorrow. We'll bust out the camera and post pics of the NW crew as they come through over the next few weeks. Looking forward to seeing who shows up!
Carol and I are staying at the Inverness, #904, stop by and say hi if you're in the area or call the cell at 503 544-7495.

340 is pretty good, I think that's around what we paid. Corpus is like 5 hours away though, if you came to SPI I'd probably just stay there.

If you see Jeff Hoxtel from Air Padre running around, tell him Forrest says hi.

Thinking about going to Corpus in the summer. What is the wind doing around that time?

Corpus has a standard 17 to 25 mph thermal wind from March to November if I remember correctly. It's driven by the thermals created by the hot temperature of the Rio Grande Valley. (I grew up in San Antonio, it's f'ing hot!) Yummy citrus fruit though!
Contact Jeff Howard at Prokitesurf.com he'll recommend the best time to come. Plus, he's a cool dude and can make sure you get to demo some kites and boards while you're down.

The locals in Corpus are the friendliest bunch I've ever come across. When I was there we spent one day at Wildcat and three days at the Packery Channel. I think most people would enjoy Wildcat the best, and according to Jeff, it gets the best wind of any location in Corpus.
Wildcat is the local spot for all the people who aren't lucky enough to have a beach in their backyard like Ryan Riccitelli and Bucky Ashcraft. Though, if you send those guys a email, I bet they'd invite you over for a private session. Bucky is on Best's forums, his username is Bucky:

Wildcat is located at the end of Wildcat Drive in Portland, TX. It's actually called Bayview Park.
Packery channel is awesome, super flat water, fish swimming around everywhere, you could kite here and catch lunch. The water is all part of the Laguna Madre and is the temperature of bath water. There are some pretty scary sliders here too.

There is some more info about both of these locations here:

You can catch some waves at Bob Hall pier too either with a kite or just a surf board.

April 17 - 2007 - Field Intel Report - SPI -
Three NW kiters were spotted at the flats this afternoon riding BIG kites and BIG boards. Smiles and high fives were displayed frequently even though jumping was limited. New SRT was tried out and enjoyed. Landboard was played with - no injuries to report!
Yesterday was fantastic - 20 to 25, 8's, 10, 12's out in abundance. Warm water, warm wind. 3/2 shorties, sunscreen, and cold beer at the end of the day.
Wind seems to blow stronger in the a.m., tapers off some by 2:00 p.m. or so. Rode until 7 p.m. tonight, last ones on and off the water. Things are looking good!
