Sat Mar 03, 07 1:00 pm OR Coast suggestions |
|
|
Going to make a trip from Hawaii to the OR coast in July. Any suggestions on where to go? Thinking the North Coast/Sunset beach sounds like a good spot for reliable winds and hopefully some waves. Also going to have some non-kiters around...are there other activities nearby? Would I be able to rent or demo a directional/surf-style board? Can only fit my TT in my travel bag. Thanks for the help and looking forward to the trip |

| Sunset has Seaside ~10 miles south with plenty to do, but there's not a whole lot if they decide to stay with you while you kite. I don't ride the northern coast much, so I don't know how consistent the wind is from day to day, but even if not, there's always the Gorge. The central coast can be good too. From South Beach, Newport to Siletz Bay at the southern end of Lincoln city you can have both waves and flat water (with lots of nonkiting type stuff - mostly shopping, food, etc.). And they're less than 30 minutes apart! |

PACWAVE in Warrenton, CLEANLINE in Seaside and Cannonbeach and GORGE PERFORMANCE in Portland for rentals--not sure about rentals with ASI in Portland however. Give one of them a shout for your needs. Secondly, those shops rent surf gear, but not sure about kiting gear. If it's not windy at the coast at that time you better hit Hood River/Gorge (rarely is it not windy anywhere in Oregon) and I know they demo/rent boards up there, but you'll aready have a TT.
As far as stuff to do besides kiting. Surfing, bike rentals, landboarding, and tons of hikes all around the Oregon Coast. FYI, all of the Oregon Coast are public lands so there is lots to see. If no winds and there is swell/waves, go to Shortsands and be sure to check out Manzanita--great coast town and when the winds are dead up North, it is often the only place to go. It's about 30 miles south of Seaside. Sunset beach is just north of Seaside by about 8 miles. One can hit Cannon Beach, Shortsands and Manzanita within those 38 miles. |

South Beach State Park - right at the best kiting spot on the Oregon Coast. Reserve ahead of time for peak summer weekends, cause it will fill up.
Next to that Beverly Beach State Park, with good kiting there too, althogh this summer they're reconstructing the Hwy. 101 bridge, and there's going to be lots of construction noise during the daytime. |

| Steve, is the campground at South Beach pretty similar to Beverly? I drove into the S.B. entrance once, but couldn't really see much of the way everything was setup. I assume they have, yurts, real showers, etc. too, right? |

My parents have property right above Beverly Beach campground.
Wind on Beverly can get a little weird because of Cape Foulweather right north can cause vortices. Probably worth it to drive to South Beach for the clean air, but Bev has a nice campground.
South beach is 15 mins from Bev so camp at Bev - if you don't like it go to south. If no wind at South Beach go to the Rogue!
btw I was at north beach the other day w/ my landboard and I ran into a local who said he had helped a friend launch and kite on Yaquina. Anyone ever do that? I know you really have to nail the wind. |

South Beach is a football field type motor home infested campground. The walk to the beach is to long and you will end up driving anyway.
Beverly is more in the woods but still has plenty of motorhome and weekend tourist campers. Still driving to beach.
Up from Beverly is Otter Rock, and not far to LC. South to Agate and South Jetty.
Anyplace you can get to camp in central coast will work, plan on a short drive either way.

I camped w/my family last summer (August) at Beverly. It blew good 11 & 15m for 3 days in the sun. I went to Newport each day to get some but it was always fogged in and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. I'm sure it was a strange little pattern but Beverly was just awesome. The waves would unload right on the shore but leave you a backdoor so you could get out and grab some more. After talking to some locals, they said that pattern actually happens more often that you think. The campground is great and as said before, in the trees with fun little hikes for the kiddies.

yup, S. Beach camp ground is not a greatest. the best spots are on the beach side of the loops. there are showers, bathrooms etc. there is not a lot of privacy for each site if you need that.
the walk to the beach is 1/4 of a mile on a nice paved trail. not really that far. its great to be able to camp there and not have to get in the car to get in the water.
most spots are out of the wind which is also a plus. i havent camped at Beaverly so i cant compare the two.
Im almost sure the waves are better at S. beach though.

South coast usually has more wind, which can mean too much. Floras lake is a great camping area with showers and some warm flat water. then from there go north to whiskey for a few day rides based from the lake.
I would move around .. couple days here and there. expierience oregon.
Newport has it all, lots of shopping for supplies there as well.
Its been said that Ft. Stevens is the best in oregon handsdown..
have a good trip. |

| I'll throw in a quick plug for Pacific City here. Although the wind isn't as strong as Manzanita, or Florence, it has pretty good winds, great surf, and is right in the middle of the coast...gives you a good staging area to get out and see all of the coast! |
