Curious if the oil explosion in Mosier is affecting the down river kiting locations with the smoke, any oil, etc.

If it is, thankfully the wind doesn't seem to be big enough today to have kiters out there.

Mega traffic jam on I-84 (and Hwy 14) now so I wouldn't try to get here.
No wind all weekend and super hot so much better to head to the coast

Over here in White Salmon the air had a metallic taste to it. At 8 PM the dark smoke plume was gone so they must have used some of the foam from PDX airport. At 10PM traffic is still a mess, 2-3 hour delays. A boom has been placed at the mouth of Rock Creek which flows into the Columbia. It is 200-300 yards west of the oil spill. The Columbia won't be affected from the spill because I-84 is between it and the fire. I talked to our fire chief and he said all you can do is let it burn out. 1-2 cars were on fire, 31,000 gallons each. It looks like we have dodged a major environmental disaster because of calm winds and distance from the river. All the more reason to stop these oil and coal trains thru the gorge!!!!

Saturday morning update: The fire is out, traffic is normal, but....the Dept of Ecology has discovered an oil sheen on the Columbia River. There is a demonstration and march thru Hood River at noon today. It will be at the Park downtown near the library. Our environmental nightmare came true yesterday.

Our Eugene daily rag, the R-G, reports today, under an AP byline, that the Mosier "wastewater treatment plant and the sewer system are not operating" as a result of the derailment. No explanation as to why.
Imagine the consequences of a real disaster to public services.

hrw: Hearing today that 10,000 gallons of crude oil went into the Mosier wastewater treatment plant made me cringe. Being very familiar with the workings of that plant, that's a major clean up job to get the oil off all the piping and equipment, and get everything back in working condition. I guess for now they're diverting incoming sewage into a catch basin, and trucking that out.

Crude and Pootonium in the river!? Too much. Mad

Trucking it out? Shit dude they should put it in rail cars instead, oh wait, um...

In a more serious note, that sucks especially at start of summer, though it could have been a lot worse even.
Hope it can be cleared up quickly, but sounds like a big job...

I heard the main line coming into the plant was crushed/damaged in the accident and the oil from the train cars entered the system at the break.
I vault has been installed and sewage is being trucked out currently.
I heard they have a boil water advisory as water stocks were severely depleted.

From the article above:

" They deserve to know that the causes of this derailment have been both identified and fixed, and there should be a moratorium on oil train traffic until they get those explanations and assurances."

Live by the sword, die by the sword. Seems kiters have never been the victim of a "one accident and you are banned" scenario. Oh....wait.....doesn't that happen all the time with kiting? Sure does.

So how about this.

' They deserve to know that the causes of this kite incident have been both identified and fixed, and there should be a moratorium on kiting until they get those explanations and assurances.'

Again, live by the sword, die by the sword. Check your nose in the air attitude and offer what help and support that can be given to those affected. This includes the rail company who really did not want this to happen either. They should pay, but not suffer the consequences of less than intelligent knee jerk reactions by those who deem themselves above mistakes or unforeseen consequences.

You’re comparing a ‘kiting incident’ to the obvious potential disaster of exploding oil trains? It’s not a problem of ‘nose in the air attitude’, it’s an issue much wider in scope and consequences.

The fact that you consider the Mosier oil by rail incident ‘a mistake and unforeseen consequence’ is a total joke.

In 2013 alone, more oil was spilled from railroad cars than the entire period from 1975-2012. It doesn’t take too much of a leap to conclude that transporting Bakken oil by rail is not a good idea. A crude oil spill anywhere in the Columbia River Estuary could devastate the Columbia’s natural and economic resources. A LOT of peoples’ livelihoods here depend on the natural surroundings, whether it be tourism, farming, recreation, fishing etc. Rail communities are put at risk each time an explosive train passes through town.

Emergency responders and local firefighters have to deal with catastrophic consequences, while a few on either end profit. Community leaders and firefighters are forced to wait helplessly as oil cars burn themselves out and oil leaks into the ground and rivers because the fire is too hot to fight with water.

Just a few examples of how Bakken oil by rail accidents don’t qualify as an ‘unforeseen consequence’:

My understanding is that when the locals met in a town hall style meeting this week with the rail PR staff, all attending lapped up the wonderfully smooth BS with no one choking. Kinda like having the sweetest Hollywood star to your own tiny little town. Who could possibly object?

Listen to Mosier's mayor on OPBs Think Out Loud. She said their town meeting was over around 8pm and everyone was shocked at 8:30 when a train came through with no notice just feet away from the wrecked oil cars that were still leaking. No cause for the accident was given to her and it occurred at slow speeds on a straight section of track. She said the town feels "helpless" since they have no power over the tracks or even to demand answers. It will take congressional action to change that.
