Last week, the U.S. Senate passed a dirty and dangerous energy bill that, for
the first time in over 20 years, weakens protections for our coast and allows an
inventory of offshore oil and gas reserves. But the fight to protect our coasts
is far from over.

After 2700 of you signed onto the Petition to Protect the Oregon Coast, Sen.
Wyden and Sen. Smith both voted to strip the provision that weakens coastal
protections, and Sen. Wyden voted against the bill's final passage. Now, we need
to convince Gov. Kulongoski and all our Representatives and Senators in Congress
to do whatever it takes to protect the Oregon coast.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so we're compiling a photo album to present
to Oregon's leaders and inspire them to go to the mat for our coast. If you have
a picture of friends or family enjoying the Oregon Coast, please send them to
us, along with a short note saying something like "Protect the Oregon Coast!"
Then, ask your family and friends to help by forwarding this email to them.

Please email the picture in the text of an email, or as an attachment, and send
it to OSPIRG's field director Laura Etherton at Etherton@ospirg.org.

Or, send your non-digital photos to: Laura Etherton, OSPIRG, 1536 SE 11th Ave,

Background:

The Oregon coast is an amazing place -- home to breathtaking scenery, important
coastal communities, hundreds of species of fish and even grey whales. But the
oil and gas industries are pushing to open up our coast to drilling. In June,
the U.S. Senate passed its version of the Federal Energy Bill, including a
provision to weaken the West Coast moratorium on offshore drilling.

For generations, Oregon residents and visitors have spent time on the coast to
fish, camp, walk on the beach and go whale watching. It is also the backbone of
our coastal communities, home to over half a million Oregonians and important
businesses like outdoor recreation, tourism and commercial fishing. Oregonians
have a strong history of protecting the Coast. In 1973, Governor Tom McCall
declared every mile of beach the property of the people of Oregon. And in
response to a disastrous oil spill thirty years ago off the coast of Santa
Barbara, Calif., Oregon enacted a ban on all drilling in state waters.

Unfortunately, the gas and oil industries, emboldened by their recent advances
toward drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, are pushing for
increased access for offshore exploration and extraction. That state ban on
drilling in state waters expired in 1995, and since then we've relied on the
federal moratorium on offshore drilling in federal waters to protect Oregon's
coast. Now, that federal moratorium is under attack. On June 28, the U.S.
Senate passed its version of the Federal Energy Bill that would allow the
industry to inventory offshore oil and gas resources. The exploration required
to do an inventory causes damage to the ocean environment, and allowing it
erodes the historic moratorium on drilling off the coast and paves the way for
drilling.

Now is the time to act to protect the Oregon coast. We're calling on Oregon's
Governor and congressional delegation to stand up for the Oregon coast by
renewing the state offshore drilling ban, and defending the federal coastal
protections.
