Yeah, it's crowded out there these days. We seem to preach the same messages every summer - watch out for beginners, don't practice air transitions over the event site beach, don't let your unleashed dog shit on my kite while its lines are laid out on the shore's edge on the sandbar, yada yada. Flip side is true though - beginners need to understand the wind and launch patterns, and that standing still with kites at 12:00 just off the sandbar's middle edge can interfere with folks going and coming back in.
Also, when coming back from WS bridge and westward as the wind is dying, toeside is often most expeditious, but yeah, lots of tools staying too close to shore and doing tricks when there's room to spread out, too. I watched one practicing aerial tricks inside the buoy at the Event Site just the other day... almost as bad as the families that camp with their kids on the tiny spit of sand we have to walk across when there's a gigantic beach many of us worked hard to fund just to the west of the Event Site.
Lots to complain about... or not. Glad you "get it" - see you on the water! |

consider this part of 'paying your dues' to become a kiter. If we could, we'd give you guys an area and keep everyone out of it. The fact that 100 or so other kiters ride out of the beginner/lesson zone says that. Keep it up, you'll be above the bridge doin'yo muthafuk'n thang in no time |

Not endorsing this behavior at all, just outlining that temptation gets the better of all of us at some point - I promise you Wannabekiter at some point when you are launching from the bar you will be tempted to pop a backroll or frontroll off of those initial waves that roll in on bigger days |

No, it doesn't. Speak for yourself. |

I don't plan on throwing tricks in the area mentioned but lets remember, when trying to learn new tricks lots of crashing is involved. sometimes those crashes result in a self rescue. I tend to throw tricks close to shore so if something bad happens and I get hurt or can't relaunch my kite I'm still close to shore.
Hopefully there can still be some portions of the sandbar/marina/etc where guys and gals working on tricks can work on progressing.
Its also nice for people who are from out of town to have a spot where their family and friends can capture some photos of them riding.
Not disagreeing with the reasons for this thread. Just pointing out that there is a logical explanation for why people tend to throw tricks in the area of concern.
Years ago I remember hearing the beginners were supposed to walk to the end of the sandbar to stay out of the way. I guess maybe the rules changed?
Be stoked! _________________ www.youtube.com/c/christianjohnsons |

I don't understand how the post in the link you attached refers to a "f$&k off" type arguement. Looks more like nobody took the bait...
The main concern is each other's safety. It is a big river yes, and I will continue to ride everywhere including the shallows. The flatter, and less deep water adjacent to the sandbar is always going to attract people learning and that goes for people doing tricks too.
Perhaps yelling at people and saying things like "GO AWAY" is not the best approach. Being nice goes a long way, especially when you expect it in return.
Again, be safe out there. Give people common courtesy and if your not comfortable with the amount of room you have, say something like "more space please" with a smile and a wave...it's amazing how much more effective that is (mind blown*) _________________ I stretch my wings and pull the strings |

Sol-flyer, you're correct. I must have been thinking about another post where the response was not as friendly!
thanks for keeping me honest. |

Great advice!
These problems seem to always be around. For sure they were when I was learning back in '03. Shallow water close to shore is a rare commodity on the Columbia for people learning and more advanced riders learning more tech. tricks.
You new people have no idea how bad we had it back in '03. We were only allowed to use the kite spit (upriver of the spit, east of the existing pylon) only for land and launch. With high water there often times only enough room to land and launch I kite at a time. Well, maybe they did two at times. Can you imagine how little shallow water was available back then?
We also had to drive in reverse both ways to the Event site for a session, it was probably snowing even though it was summer time, AND HERSHEY BARS COST ONLY A NICKEL
I've forgotten when the big rains came and washed out hwy 35 upriver (winter of '06 I'm guessing?) which brought down all the debris, sand, and rock. |

No worrys bro! I know there is plenty of threads on here of trash talk. (They hate us because they ain't us)
I love riding with you guys!, (that includes everyone!) and I will be one of the kiters jumping and showing off around you (safely of course) and make sure you see me. Then I'm gonna ride by and yell "your turn!" Because that's what made me love this sport and the stoke I spread is like a wildfire. BOOM! _________________ I stretch my wings and pull the strings |

I would like a little clarification on the following. The location of the above complaint. Sounds like this occurred not at the EV but some other location?
I have personally witnessed beginners and even people taking lessons at one location that is not appropriate. Please note that if you are taking lessons or a beginner at an advanced location, you are the guest !!! Just like if you were skiing and doing down a black diamond run. Your actions are affecting the more advanced riders; you are the guest and the one that should be watching out. Just like if an advanced rider was riding within a beginner’s area, the advanced rider is the guest. When I ski within a beginner's green run, I’m the guest and I’m the one watching out. BUT if you're riding in an advanced area, you are responsible.
Please note that I don’t know the location of this complaint.
I would also look at this angle. When you kite the ocean, you are the guest of the ocean. The ocean is an advanced location and the ocean don’t not give a F#%$ about your ability. The rider is the one that must take responsibility. |
