PostThu May 28, 15 8:02 am    SAFETY AND COURTESY RULES 4 KITING JONES BEACH Reply with quote

At the request of MYSELF and working with the property owner of JONES BEACH that is very graciously allowing us to use his property for kiteboarding, I want to cover a few items and remind everyone of the new rules passed by the State effective this year and some Safety Concerns.

So in light of that here are few Rules, Concerns and Safety items:

First off, I want to give props to all the kiters that have done a great job of being polite and not leaving trash and other foot prints behind on the beach. We have been lucky and not had any major issues with the kiting community so lets all help out and keep it that way.

Remember that where most of us park and access the beach is private property.

#1: No camping at Jones allowed effective this year. This is a Important! If you want to camp, drive 5 minutes back into Clatskanie city park. It is only $5 a night and it has bathrooms and showers, plus you can grab some mexican/pizza and some beers.

#2: SAFETY!! Remember to give others space, 2 kite line lengths away from people and particularly HORSES and Families playing on Beach. We have had a couple minor issues with kiters flying near horses and kites flying over people on the beach and it has made them nervous and uncomfortable, I hear about everything so please follow the 2 KITE LINE RULE.

Many people own horses and use the beach, be respectful and avoid kiting near Horses, People have died and beaches have been shut down beacuse of kiters and horses!! Was a fatality in the Caymens 4 years ago for example......

#3: Beach closes at 10pm so if after 9 please be quiet as to not disturb the neighbors who wake up at 4am to farm.

#4: AVOID Ship traffic, if you see a ship coming, come in to shore and take a 5 min break. This is for your safety, ships destroy the wind and create a lot of turbulence and you will lose control of your kite. It is better to land your kite on your terms and take a 5 min break for the ship pass rather than your kite comes down on the winds terms and swim in too shore. Plus impeding a ship can cost you thousands of dollars in fines.

#5: Pick up after yourself and others. Lets keep the beach clean as an example to everyone.

#6: BATHROOMS, Let's not use the owners property as our personal toilets. I am providing A Porta-potty for all kiters to use!! I will have it set up for use with the next 2 days, hopefully by tommorrow, Friday 5/29. LOCATION will be near Air Pirates Kiteboarding shop and school on Far West End of Jones Beach. Look for the porta-potty on the south side of the road in-between 2 trailers. Or I may place it right by the School. Still finalizing location with the owner. Will update when I have it placed.

#7: Wrap your lines so they don't get run over by cars driving on the beach.

#8: PARKING: Please try and park in groups EAST (to the right when facing river) of the main west beach entrance so everyone has room to set up and launch kites without vehicles in the way or the hazard of a kiter being thrown into a your car or truck!! KITING is not suppose to be like playing LEAP FROGGER when trying to walk to the water with your kite in the air!!!

Thanks everyone and have an awesome summer! Share the stoke and pass this information along to others who may not know. This incredible kite locations future rests solely on US and OUR Actions. DOn't F*%K it up for everyone!

Cheers Everyone and see you on the water.

Thank You Nate,
Please clarify item # 8 Parking. I used to park in the paved site, lately I've been following others and parking west of the lot (see ? mark).
Also... If one has 4X4 can they drive to the water's edge?

Nate, thanks for all your hard work. Jones is a real gem and a great alternative for beginners and to avoid the crowds around Hood River.

With regard to parking I think he was referring to those that drive out onto the beach to park. Sometimes there are so many cars parked up and down the beach that it can make launching and landing kites difficult.

wylieflyote Yes you can drive and park at water edge. I used too all the time to unload my zodiak into the river. Some guys bring jet skis and unload at also.

Exactly! On a busy day people tend to park all over the place in random places and angles, staggered all over making it dangerous to launch and land. People have been yarded into the side of vehicles before at Jones beach.
Take that into consideration when you pick a parking spot. Never know when someone might fly into your truck and smash it. I've seen it happen !! Shocked Popcorn

Bill that is a pretty good example too I like it Smile I like the addition of the fisherman parking. Very true they tend to park in the same spots all the time. Good example Thumb's Up

I Believe if we keep 2 kite line lengths away from the parked cars like in the picture above and the launch and land area it will be alot safer for everybody involved. We are getting more and more beginner kiters every year at Jones Beach. Good to get on top of it now and create some good positive habits.

Get some good habits ingrained within/along the beach and they will pay some dividends later!

Shouldn't cars park upwind of launch/land zone, in a situation where wind is flaky or a beginner crashes kite near the beach it would be much safer for both kites and people to crash them on sand and not cars. It's easy to imagine someone loosing control at launch and the kite drifting downwind towards the cars or even worse if someone gets caught into the loop-of-death and the kite pulls him into the cars parked east of launch.

Parking on the far west end of the beach past the fence line would work out well also if it was a not crowded only few kiter day. Sand tends to get alot softer over there, easier to get stuck and the amount of room is much smaller with fisherman driving in and out through their alot, would be cramped and probably piss them off, well I know a few it would piss off.

Being a side on shore wind, and most people launching kites facing the road, you would end up in the trees and dragged toward the road, less likely the cars.
