I think we've found our Paul Bunyan wanna-be. Any guesses as to the real identity?

I hope you never go to Hawaii to kite. With those narrow beaches, the palm and pine trees are always in the way. And all that damn coral - that shit is sharp. Why don't we dynamite or dredge it all up?

And don't get me started on sharks, Portuguese man-o-wars, and jellyfish...

the tree is symbolic of the stevenson launch.
some kiters don't kite here because of the difficult launch and wind shadows. I respect that. just go somewhere else and kite.
it amazes me what some humans think they can do.
anyhow before deciding the fate of the tree, is it for sure going to need to be cut down? I'm no tree expert, but possibly a steel sleeve around it's trunk to maintain it's shape until it grows back? like I said I'm no expert, but it warrants confirming with a tree specialist. and yes it's a privilege to kite here knowing its property of the port. hoping those responsible see the highest penalty/fine possible for their actions.
I'm willing to contribute whether its time or money to helping plant a new tree.
as for tony, this guy does more for the town of stevenson and kiting than anyone else I know of (well except maybe dangler coming down and launching us all the time...) no reason to attack tony.

I dreaded even going down to look at it, but its not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. From the little I know about such things, its savable. More of the outer layers of a pine are dead and sacrificial, how the big guys survive forest fires.

Aside from the one post chump, I can't see a kiter vandalizing such an iconic landmark. It was done with a handsaw, and I strongly suspect local young punks. Probably the same 12 y.o. future state incarceree I saw running away from the floating dock after he poked a hole in each one. He still had the stick in his hand!

Everyone who kites at Stevenson this summer will be required to pass a polygraph test, just to make sure we eliminate any chance of a psychopathic a-hole thinking he can benefit from said a-hole action. DANGLER ON THE CASE!!!

Kook Ass Move . I hope this person is caught and permanently banned from all publicly owned recreational kiteboarding spots. It is a shame the port we needs to waste money chasing and repairing damage from a vandal .

Garden : your either a troll or a very unstable person , please seek professional help.

What a shame. That's a great shade tree and really didn't interfere with the launch. It was also the honor system lost & found depo. I wouldn't hold out too much hope of it being salvaged, but if its not too deep, it might be possible. Pretty appalling behavior and Garden's attitude.

I had the same thought about this "Gardner" troll and the infamous DanK and Proktor.

Hey Gardner get your facts straight. I don't leave my trailer or my car down at the launch. I show up to kite near the end of the day, close out the evening session and take all my stuff home. After I go around cleaning up the launch area, picking up trash and collecting lost gear.

If you were bothered by that tree then you shouldn't be launching there. I've never had any trouble with it and any half way decent kiter can figure out how to work with the little wind shadow it creates. Yeah it's difficult to work around on east winds but it's not worth cutting the tree down for.

Who ever did this is just plain selfish.

Tony

This sucks. I could use the fire wood. I will volunteer my saw and time to cut it up if need be so the port has no lost time or money on the cut down!!

On the other hand, can you imagine the view? To be able to see the beauty of the river unobstructed? Let's stay positive!

Wow garden, you have a great point. I mean that guy Tony, he does nothing for this sport. I bet he never organized an event, never gave you a smile on the water, never lent you a piece of gear. Probably never launched your kite. The way he just takes and takes and takes. He does nothing for the kiteboarding image really.

Now you, with your anonymous one post and argo attitude. Man, you are someone I really want to hang out with.

And that damn tree! I mean, nature getting in the way of what we want and how fast we want it. I mean come on, you probably had to walk about 10 feet to get around the thing. It never provided the kids and viewers any shade or a way to hang your wetsuit up or any kind of community. It just takes and takes and takes. Should have been cut down long ago to accommodate someone as great as yourself.

P.S. Why is Tony bitchen? The guy leaves his trailer in the prime parking lot spaces so he doesn't have to pack up his gear and take it home like everyone else. This takes away one of the few spots where we can actually park. Figure it out.

This is the most intelligent thing that has been said on this thread. Someone needs to get a tree specialist out there to see if it can be saved. I think it is likely that it can be.

What a bizarre action. I inspected the tree yesterday and it can not be saved. While tragic, no one died and we can all deal with this. Whoever you are "chainsaw massacre", you will be found out. As far as anyone else who may have a problem with that park, go find a place that works for you and take your bad energy elsewhere, that includes you "Garden" post.

Wink Smart advice here. As a former tree farm/landscape employee... the tree may live for many more years depending on extent of the damage. The root system will not decay immediately and the bank will be safe for possibly many years to come. These things take time so if the tree does need to be replaced there is plenty of time as replacement will be more ideal in the fall.

A tree spade probably won't be able to remove the whole tree, but most likely the stump removal and new tree to replace it would be possible via spade.

We've had plenty of arborist time here at home, which also included much lawyer time (Damn neighbors!). Someone qualified needs to obviously look at it... but if the bark down to the "cambrian" layer has been 360 degree severed... it's not hopeful:
https://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071229233025AAZj7MZ

"in time (shortly) the leaves will wilt and the plant will use up any reserves it already had in the top part of it and the tree will die.
basically the tree takes nutrients and some of the moisture up through the phloem (located just inside the outer bark).
if this is severed completely (or almost completely) around, it's unable to sustain itself."

Yeah, the poor tree is a goner. It's called "girdling", by cutting thru the cambriam layer beneath the bark all the way round, this asshole has destroyed the tree's vascular system.

Congratulations Asshat, you've destroyed a magnificent work of nature 25 years in the making. Proudly take your place with the great cultural destroyers of our time, the Maoists, ISIS, jihadists, POL POT, et al. You have earned your place in the annals (read ANUS) of our brief history on this planet.

I will commit whatever resources I can to assure that the tree is replaced with a LARGER, GRANDER, WIND BLOCKING BEHEMOTH OF A TREE. THEN I WILL TAKE WHAT REMAINS OF THIS GRAND OLD TREE AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR RECTUM YOU FUCKING DIKWAD!!!

And if anyone ever complains about a tree interfering with their air Johnny fix again in my presence, I will shred their kite into bite size pieces and cram it down their throat (in a figurative sense only, as I abhor violence.)
