Thu Oct 30, 14 3:28 pm gender bender larks head for a loop? |
|
|
So I have a 2012 waroo . I want to use a slingshot bar with the kook proof larks head knots. The waroo is set up with male leads on all four ends. What do we call the extenders that switch from male to female? Are they sold at kite shops? I remember a post from the Knak about how easy it is to sew these Larks head loops into a line? Any ideas? I know im asking for it with gender bending this close to holloween.

The guys forum name is "nak". Give him a pm...
I used a new slings bar with an old 1st generation Waroo. I think that Slingy has knots on the back lines (outside)... Past the knots on the end in just turned the end into a lark and made my own lark/ monkey fist. This shortens the lines length by the amount that it takes to make this monkey fist so you might need to test fly it with someone to get the proper setting you're comfortable with. Works great.
I don't do it anymore as I killed the kiting this summer in the Manzo surf. It lived a good life, but it was time for it to go.

Are you sure it's a 2012? I don't think they made the Waroo after 2010.

You can buy universal pigtails that can hook up either way, look like this. Or just knot some line yourself, the stitching isn't really needed.

LF sells a pigtail set for around 15 bucks, maybe try one of their shops in town to see if they stock any?

Yea there is, the answer. Ran into a ocean rodeo bar/line. The kook proof knots are set up reverse of slingshot. Kook proof is a great idea. However, kite companies cant agree on a standard. The answer is in universal pig tails.Thanks DYYlan

Looks like you can order what you need online.

In the discussion of “connections”, I have found it less confusing to use the terminology: “loops” “knots” and “fixed to kite line” or “fixed to bridle line”. Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words.
I myself like the idea of making “connections” 100% “goof-proof”. There is a way that I do this, and have been using the set-up for 8 years now, but still would like to find an easier way. Here is a link to a KF thread discussion of this idea.

Yep it would be nice if the kite makers could agree on many things to make them universal and have a standard/s. Kook proof system is a great idea as "sh*t happens."
Loops = Monkeyfists
Knots = Pigtails
To make a connection of the two separate ends, one threads the pigtail/knot thru a Loop/monkeyfist and then cinches down the monkeyfist.

To achieve this standard, we will have to get into our time-machine, and make our protest case in 2004, or earlier. As an example, imagine that Naish now regrets making their “kook-proof” system with “loops” fixed to the end of the front center lines, and now considers the idea of switching to the “kook-proof” system that most other kite makers decided to use, where the “loops” are fixed to the ends of the rear kite lines. This would result in the use of an older bar with a new kite being not only incompatable, but outright dangerous, to the point that the lawyers would advise against doing such an irresponsible thing... as many kiters would hook up their new kites, with the front kite lines going to the rear bridles, and vice-versa.
Back to the subject of confusing terms... is a “monkeyfist” the same thing as the commonly used term “larkshead”?

"...is a “monkeyfist” the same thing as the commonly used term “larkshead”?"
It's a different knot. A monkey's fist is intended to be bulkier, and usually bears some sort of a heavy, solid object (e.g. a nut or a big bearing) in its center. Typically they are tied on the end of a line so it can be thrown a considerable distance--commonly used for tossing a line to a pier so someone ashore can haul a in a mooring line and secure a vessel.
Google "monkey fist" at your own risk…
(All that being said, I dunno how to tie a larkshead.)
