Hi, I'm thinking about a trip to Baja sometime in second half of January and I wanted to check the avg. wind speed - windfinder is showing 7mph and only 10% chance of >= 4Bft.
Does that sound right? I was hoping for a steady 14+ mph.

The weight 210 lbs. use 11m 75%, 14m 15% and 9m 10%. Only blown off kite once then just rented a pole for the day. Those are the kites I bring with one board.

January is a great month for LV. I've stayed there all month for 2 years and only had skunkage on a handful of days. There were also a few days where I swore it was a no-go so I drove to La Paz for some shopping... only to come over the pass and see sails & kites on the water. That said, I heard somewhere that the statistical high-point of the season is February 21st. January has Burning Bush!!

I'm 220 and my 9.5m, 12m and 14m kites put me on the water as early as 10am and able to ride through 5pm so many times.. Made for some great days!!

My last trip was at the end of January and in to February. Out of 12 days I kited 8 (however 9 of them were kitable)

I'm 175lb and since I've only kited in the Gorge after moving to US my biggest kite is 10m (and it covered 95% of this season for me on TT - except easterlies in Rooster and 2-3 days in HR when I've used a 7m). So i guess i should be ok Smile
I assume you can rent gear on the spot (in case 10m won't be enough)? I've found a link to Elevation Kiteboarding school in LV but i don't see any rent option on their website.

Baja Joes also mentions rentals, I know the beach shed is huge and packed full of all kinds of new gear. Located in the center of all the action.:
"Bring your own equipment, or rent ours. We have kites, kiteboards, windsurfers, sit-on-top kayaks, and other sporting equipment."

ExotiKite mentions rentals but they tag it with "if you took lessons from them". They are in Los Barriles which is about and hour and a half-ish south of La Ventana.

4/3 is the call for my old, skinny. tired bones. In February you've had a full month or more of El Norte blowing cold current south and bringing in colder waters. I've carried a 3/2, a shorty, and a 4/3... never once had a day sans 4/3. Your results may vary. Are you a swim-trunk guy at the Sandbar in June?

Unless something has changed recently, from what I understand Burning Bush is over.

I think it's unique to each person. I rode January and February with only board shorts and rash T. The only time I started to think otherwise was on a downwinder that I just wouldn't let end.

Better safe than sorry though .

Consider Los Barriles instead of La Ventana. It has better wind by about 2-3 knots.
It also has the Lord of the Wind competition January 14-18, and that event is very inclusive of average kiters, with amateur and older "Masters" categories. There are also some great parties, live music, and other performances and activities that don't require competition entry to attend.
Los Barriles is only an hour from the airport, while La Ventana is an hour farther up the road.
Los Barriles also has more lodging, restaurants, shopping, bars, etc.

Thanks everyone for the input and all useful information - I'll take a look at Los Barriles as well
