The Off Season Kite launch and land access at the Hood River Event Site will start back up as of Thursday September 15.

Remember, launching and landing via the Event Site is not for Beginners. You must have very good launching and landing skills as well as ALWAYS using a buddy to help out with BOTH launching and landing of your kites.
*This is a windshadow launch spot, so winds will be punchy and holey, be patient, wait for the wind to fill in and hold your kite in the air. Once your kite is up and flying MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, hop on your board or body drag out to clear wind.
Standing with your kite in the air at the Event Site is considered very dangerous and causes hazards of other kiters around you.'

LAUNCH and LANDING RULES : ImportantTips to Remember
1)Pump/dry and attach/remove your lines IN THE DESIGNATED PUMP/DRY ZONE AT THE EAST END OF THE EVENT SITE or if not busy, THE UPPER GRASS AREA ABOVE THE TREES. This keeps the designated LAUNCH/LAND zones clear for others to launch and land their kites safely and efficiently

2) Treat this area like an aircraft carrier. Your either launching or landing in and you'd do well to clean up your gear from either zone quickly.
Once your kite is flying, get out and away from the Event Site (standing flying a kite at 12o'clock on the beach is dangerous and blocks others from launching and landing)

3) NEVER teach friends or run lessons in the launch and landing areas. It causes traffic and frustration issues for others. Move out to the far end of the sandbar or send them to one of the professional kite schools please.

4)There is also always plenty of room on the sandbar, so if you are unsure your ability to launch and land safely in gusty, holey winds, and keep out of everyone's way, then, please use common sense and utilize the Sandbar for your launching and landing needs.

5)NO KITING INSIDE OF THE WHITE BUOYS EXCEPT FOR LAUNCHING AND LANDING!!
THE BOUNDARY AREA IS SET UP TO PROTECT A LARGE SPACE FOR KITEBOARDERS TO SET UP AND LAUNCH/LAND THEIR GEAR WITHOUT SUNBATHER/BEACH USER TRAFFIC ISSUES.

COURTESY GUIDELINES :
Please be courteous to other kiters, windsurfers, spectators on the water and on the beach. Give room for others to safely ride safely, watch out for kiters/windsurfers in distress, assist with help when you can and always, always share the stoke!
*Show off kiters/windsurfers riding aggressively inside the white marker buoys or riding into the Basin Channel are in violation of maritime law and doing so will result in both a fine from the Sheriff and losing access privileges on Port of Hood River Properties!

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and for any help that you may provide in sharing and promoting these safety and courtesy messages with the rest of the kite community

Typically it has been at the end of September that we are back on the Event Site.

But, each year, it depends on the amount of users and the comfort level from the Port on safety.

We currently have a request in for reopening the launch/landing flight deck on the Event Site grass for the Friday after Labor Day, but this is only a request so far.

If you have any positive thoughts to add to this or in support of this idea, please submit a politely and intelligently written letter of recommendation to the Port of Hood River.

Thank you
Your local CGKA Reps

EVENT SITE KITEBOARD LAUNCHING ENDS JUNE 12, 2016

EVENT SITE KITEBOARD LAUNCHING NOTICE:
Starting on Monday, June 13 kiteboard launching and landing from the Event Site grass will be prohibited for the duration of the summer season. The increased crowding of the busy summer season combined with lower river levels annually prompt the Port to require that kiteboarders launch and land from the Sandbar. The Port of Hood River appreciates the cooperation and attention to safety of all users at the Event Site.
