Leashes are worn to protect the people below you on the wave. If you are looking for a way to simplify board retrieval then use straps. Yesterday at kanaha the waves were 10 feet high, slow breaking, and fun. Of the guys who made it out to uppers, there was not one with a leash .
I'm strapped because I don't wanna worry bout my board. At moks it's the same, not a one leash.
When you get rolled in the impact zone you won't want to worry bout no leash. Straps allow you to bury your board under you, or kick it off if you lose your kite.
Surfers wear a leash to protect others on the break .
