The Beaufort powered by a 'SkySail' sails in the Baltic Sea in a September 2006 handout photo. The 'SkySail', a 160 square-meter kite tethered to a mast, has successfully undergone years of trial runs and Bremen shipowner Beluga Shipping believes it will help its vessels cut fuel use by 15 to 20 percent.

Hope it has a "fifth"line for easy relaunch Wink

do have any action sequences of them launching and landing the thing?

launching our pipsqueak kites is nervous enough... 160 square meters!!! (that's too big even for sq)

I'm so stealing that thing. What do you think the range would be if you weigh a buck fifty?

Damn! We've been complaining about kite prices at $1500, check out the price tag on one of these kites.

"The SkySails system doesn't come cheap. Its price tag runs between 500,000 and 2.5 million euros ($660,000 to $3.3 million), according to Reuters."

So who's gonna be the first to bite the bullet and put one of these up at Sauvie's? I imagine you'll have the water all to yourself on those typical 5-10mph days Wink

I'd imagine those prices wouldn't seem too high if it could take 20% off the fuel price for one of those boats.

They also mentioned something about needing an "engineer" on board to handle the kite...who's up for the job??? Also, does the kite come complete with the engineer or do you have to buy them separately?

Phillip, congrats on the surgery, and get well soon! We'll need someone to post beer drinking surfing pictures pretty soon.

Wouldn't a smaller kite set up to fly continuous controlled loops
generate much more power?

my guess is a more dynamic system like that would be too risky, or require too much attention.

you've got a point though, they are probably using the kite for "downwinders".

Here's some more practical use of big kites:

(If I understand right I think they use the kitelooping method that Hein suggests.)
