hein - what about a smaller flip tip board?
seems like one advantage of the flip tips and more efficient shape is you could go smaller and still keep the low end and land-ability of the bigger boards. |

I've got a 133x39 designed. Here's a screen shot:
The running length of these boards is 126.5. They also have
wider tips, straighter outlines and a flatter rocker. Note how
the rail tucks in toward the tips and the flip tip becomes gradually
more pronounced inboard from there. That keeps the flip tips
from catching water going forward when the nose penetrates
chop or as you set the rail for a jump. And since there is no
step release, the entry is clean, so water glancing off the tips
does not produce sudden stopping jolts from the front. But when
you really try to stuff the nose they keep the board from pearling.
(That's how I hurt my foot - remember aw fuck)
The flip tips really do not change how the board rides. That
is determined by my bottom shape, Thin Fins, rocker and outline.
They just make riding and landing hot less risky and dangerous.
You can ride away from more of the close ones. They reduce
the submarine effect that happens when the tip goes under as
you're trying to get going. The board just pops right up. And
they reduce the fear factor when going off the wind and over
the back of rolling chop.
Maybe that is what has helped Lenten and Hadlow take it as
far as they have. The flip tips allow you to push harder with
out getting spanked as much.

Hein, how do you think flip tips would work on something like a glide? would it be difficult/impossible to retrofit an old glide with flip tips? It's an awesome lightwind board, but pretty easy to catch a tip...

Hey Nak, some years ago saw a board the has removable flip tips...f-one maybe?
I'm still not convinced that flip tips makes the board better...if it is true like Hein is saying that it doesn't take anything away from the riding capabilities then I guess it is fine. But going from the wavetray to the FLX me me a better rider for sure. Of course I am aware that there were other differences between the boards as well, so it might be true..I don't know...
ANyways, if you come this way, please bring wind.

Hi Alex!
We're probably coming out next weekend for a few days!  So there will absolutely be some great wind... Positive waves, right?
The glide planes with ANY power at all, but I'm not so good with it in chop. If flip tips would help it could be worth a few modifications. It wouldn't have to be removable; it seems like it might be easier to mold them in permanently, but I really don't know. Not my field...

You could probably add flip tips to a Glide and I'm sure
it would improve the tip catching issue. It would take
a little length out which would be good too. Although
you'd have to be careful with the geometry so you don't
create any negative characterisitics.
I took DC's tip sucking image and updated it to illustrate
my improved design:

ok, i gotta weigh in on this, i had to go through hell to get registered on this forum
i spent two year on flip tip boards - before getting a Hein 126 last year
the flip tips work - my favorite was the 120cm underground short wide tray - that was end to end, the actual running length was shorter but it worked because it was relatively flat
i also have read that perhaps Mr Len10's boards aren't all that long either
so is it back to the future? can we go shorter, by going to a flatter rocker board with flip tips and gain some better speed/planing?

My wife, Kim, was reading this thread and was excited
to see all the enthusiasm for my new design.
Kim helps me laminate every board. It takes us about
40 minutes to 'bag' a board. Thanks Kim! I love you!
