So if I am reading this correctly...

When my neighbor's dog poops in my yard I have only been pooping in their yard once. I guess I should actually be pooping in their water about 1.5 times to be fair!

I agree that humans are probably the worst thing to happen to nature. However, I'm not sure why the columbia is often described as being excessively polluted, here is a report of ecoli levels in the sacramento river in '08 I googled:

(MPN/100ml)

Sacramento

American River at Discovery Park

1413.6

275.5

187.2

Nevada

Squirrel Creek in Western Gateway Park, Penn Valley (Deer Creek Watershed)

228.2 a

214.2

108.1

Placer

Dry Creek/ Cirby Creek confluence

2419.6

209.8

272.3

these measurements are taken only 4 days apart. It looks like in some spots they varied by a factor of 10!

I also want to point out that while e.coli is a significant cause of disease, it is specific strains that obtain virulence factors that are most worrisome - which this didn't appear to test. As other people mentioned it is also a normal part of our GI tract flora.

We all harbor bacteria that are much worse, i.e. can cause more significant disease AND can be excessively resistant to antibiotics on our skin or in our nose. There are 10x as many bacterial cells on/in a human body than there are human cells.

probably best to figure out why the levels exhibit the trend that they do, rather than be preoccupied with it exceeding a seemingly arbitrary threshold.

What I'm saying is that I feel pretty lucky and blessed to kite in the Columbia...

Statements like these are symptomatic of a brainwashed individual unable or unwilling to do some basic research.

I'll be the first one to fight for a cleaner Columbia, mainly because I've seen what other rivers around the world are like. The Columbia isn't even close to being in the worst list. I've been to places where it's damn near scary to get within 10 feet of the water, let alone put a toe in it.

I'm a big believer in fighting for clean water, and we need to continue to fight that fight here. Because if we don't, our rivers eventually will be just as bad as those other rivers. Of course, one good first step wood be to aerate the Boat Basin...
