Hard to get big enough swell and north wind to coincide. It needs at least a 10@17 to even barely break. Then the N wind blows it out pretty easy, as its a reef about a half mile offshore, just out in the open. Then there's the logistics of getting out through massive rows of shorebreak and whitewater to the reef itself - some sort of ski-assisted kite launch would be probably be necessary.

The whole tow-in contest is a shame. Its gonna end up ruining it for the few local guys who have towed there for 3 or 4 years now. Just what they need is one guy who doesn't even surf to invite up all the Santa Cruz hot shots, have a contest and make it into a big scene.

yup I 've seen it with northers and not big enough and big enough with no wind.
How about southerliies? and west or south swell?
You need a way through the shore-break?(didn't look too bad but I wasn't on the beach just up on the highway)
We are friends with the promoter of this event,(not a waterman)I've stayed at his home it's a block from the beach.
I'm pretty sure the surfies know all about this site(it's in the books as the biggest swell in Oregon and the west coast) and the event is supposed to encourage locals and further put it on the map ,it's the Casino's money "coming back into the commuinty" lol
But I wouldn't want it here either .Most of the Santa Cruz crew couldn't find Oregon and probably don't want to
But you say somebody does it regularly?
Most surf spots in Oregon are without wind(that's why they are surf spots)
