Raw fruits and veggies have much more complex nutrition than cooked. Its true and any biochemist will tell you that. The extreme heat of cooking breaks a lot of bonds, expecially the weak ones, leaving a more simple compound afterwards. Just saying its something you learn in HS chem class.
Eat raw more often.
Now some veggies need to be cooked first as to allow humans to digest them, but they are less common than you would think. Point in case, some wild mushrooms are poisnous until you boil out the toxins. But there alone you ,can see my point of chemical delta. Eat raw and I personally would rather eat organic. Just my thoughts... |

I agree they are more expensive, but not bank breaking. There are some great co-op situations in pdx where you do a weekly order and have them delivered, less trips to the store for you.
The real problem here is the shipping (petrol use) of mexican and so cal veggies. Harvested early, shipped a thousand miles and ripened with ethylene gas. Not a pretty picture. |

whatever, the frozen veggies in the store cost 30 cents a serving i doubt there is much gasoline involved per serving.
most nutritionists will tell you the frozen stuff is very close to fresh nutriotionwise.
you can defrost and warm them in a zip loc bag and warm water. (i usually use a sous-vide cooker that stays on all the time so it's 15 minutes from freezer to eating. my wife is the only one that insists on salads every day, me and the kids prefer the frozen veggies, which are like 10X easier since you can do a big shop every 3 or 4 weeks instead of buying fresh every third day
if you think there is any real cancer difference between my veggies and yours i think you're delusional. but maybe dr lurk can convince me otherwise. |

I have no response to that, especially the gasoline part. Check to see where the processing plant is, then think if its possible for those plants to grow there and if not year round where?
Also, I feel for you if you never ate a tomato straight from the plant. Do you see what they are like in a store. Lycopene anyone, I personally dream of late summer for fresh, that day, tomatoes....., um |

well, if you don't understand the concept of "per serving" or "per unit" than there is no point in having this discussion.
frozen food has an extremely efficient logistics system. trust me, i studied logistics for many years, frozen stuff has a long shelf life and thus moves efficiently on fully packed trucks and trains. that's why frozen stuff is cheap per serving. there are no chemicals involved or weirdness, it's just food that was frozen.
i wonder why it is cheap if it requires the burning of so much gasoline? hmmm. must be something dick cheney did.
sure i eat super-fresh stuff sometimes. but it is a PIA and kind of expensive. plus i go to the beach house and then hunt around for whatever is fresh in florence? screw that, stuff the house with frozen stuff every month or so.
yep, that tilapia came all the way from china. pretty cheap. tastes good with white sauce and mixed veggies. seems like a waste of time to stress over it. |

Sounds like you've got it all covered.

Tomatoes are picked green then shipped by truck or tain to your favorite burger king after being turned back into red using a gas. (and not a nice gas either) Enjoy your Whopper.
BTW Im no doctor I just listen to them and parrot back what they tell me. But sounds like pjc is eating better than me.. winter sucks so much |

eating well is the best revenge.
seriously i'm raising some kids and we were getting caught in the "let the kids live off hot dogs and fish sticks" trap. phuck that there's got to be something better.
so i read a bit about the whole sous-vide deal and figured out some stuff that was "real food" that they would eat. they're still mainly meat eaters, some veggies. now a typical argument is whether or not chicken drumsticks should be cooked 150 for 24 hours in a tomato brine or 160 for 8 hours in their own juices. it's a step in the right direction, but i doubt michael pollan would approve. meats not cheap, i get the industrial argiculture stuff, on sale, near the expiration date, cook it and freeze it. |

Chinese tilapia--full of antibiotics, hormones, pesticides and other toxins.
Plus one of the lowest in omega 3s of any fish.
But it's cheap yay!
Enjoy! |

yeah, those juicers look good, but i'm still sort of traumatized from rudy's experience on the cosby show
water bath you can cook it "lightly", keep the juices in.
i figure ill live forever, so far, so good
after auzy insisted on ketchup with the fresh white fish you gave me i decided high gourmet was a bit unrealistic for us |

Not really anti-tilapia, fine source of protein, just anti chinese farmed seafood.
Sure life will kill ya (love me some zevon), but not eating contaminated seafood sure seems like a no-brainer to me |

| well, i'll look around for some born-in-the-usa tilapia the next time i restock, but i suspect, like most media-driven fearmonger, it's both real and wildly exagerrated. to the point that you should basically ignore it and live your life. |

I know, I know, it was criminal to put ketchup on it. Shortly afterwards Anthony Borudain showed up at my house claiming he felt a terrible disturbance in the force.
Crippled by tilapia, what a horrible fate awaits me in old age. |
