Mark,
I think it depends on how you are going to ride. are you going to 'surf' the surf board with little aid from the kite once on a wave or are you going to ride powered and not really need the power from the wave.
if your going to 'Surf' the surfboard i would recomend going with a bigger board. Especially since your a bigger guy.
I ride the 5'11" SS SRT and find that on smaller waver i dont have enought power to really surf.
you might also think about riding this in the gorge as well in which case you might want to go a little smaller.
just my opinion

I am also looking to ride the tasty swell in the gorge. I think I want to be more kite driven than pure wave driven. hope this helps with the advice.
I also interested in any other boards people have had fun with.

I rode the north pacific board a demo 5,3 swallow tail and really liked it. They are custom so you can talk to the shaper and get what you want and they have demos. They are located in the back of the Dill building in Hood River. |

Mark,
I'm doing a 5-7x19 Swell Pig if you'd like to take a look
at a CAD screen shot.
I'm going to pick up the first 4-9, 5-1 and 5-7 Pigs at Cascade
today. I CNC'd the EPS blanks and Fred glassed them with
epoxy. I'll need to CNC slots for the Thin Fins and install them.
Contact me if you'd like to come by and sneak a peek.

please allow me to restate the value of this video: http://www.naish.tv/reo_800.html
good action, good film quality, easy to watch. it grows on me.
toward the end, some of the off the lips aren't half bad.

Nice vid. I'd still like to see some clips with the camera in a down-the-line point of view. It would give you a good perspective on how kite movement syncs up with bottom turns and top turns. |

the kites are moving fast...must be pretty small.
other than being in the 5-6' range (and footpads), is there a lot of difference between say a shortboard and a surf kiteboard? can i get away with a really short shortboard?
also, no one really answered...fish or surf?

hein- i can't remember, what were your prices on the swell pig? are those shaped more for gorge swell? or coastal tumultuousness? |

If you are going to actually surf the waves then you need a board that is big enough to surf without the kite......plain and simple.
If you are going to ride powered and on a rail all the time then you can go small.
There will be a new surfboard coming out this spring. High performance, rubberized soft skin, vaccuum rails like on a bodyboard, slight sidecut like a snowboard, ride with fin or no fin, soft enough body to use a leash but super high performance with carbon stiffeners on the inside.
A prototype is being sent to me in a week. |

5 foot soft rubber skinned surfboard.
175 lb rider.
Gliding and planing like a longboard.
With or without fins.
http://www.tommorey.com/ONE!_video.htm
If anyone wants one I can get a deal because he is sending out proto's to kiteboarders to try so he can test the market.
Just PM me.
Tom Morey invented the bodyboard.
Bodyboards have no fins but yet they pull in deep at pipeline.
Vaccuum rails. |

What are the differences between the swallow tail, square tail and rounded tail?
I assume the square and swallow are more floaty as they have more surface area.
what are your thoughts? _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...
