so my wife and I are trodding along the beach in P.C. (no wind, went exploring), and happened upon a 1/2 eaten duck that was still alive (his rear 1/2 was gone). Unfortunately for him (and me), he was still alive. I went ahead and bit the bullet and did what was humane, but was wondering what would have done something like that. The only thing I could come up with was probably a shark bit and the duck got away.

there were also a few seals around this weekend.

anybody got any good explanations?

Damn, that's crazy! Obviously I don't have a clue as to whether it was a shark or not, but I didn't think they did those breach style attacks so much over here. I'm sure it happens though, we just don't hear about it as much.

Just about anything could have bitten the hind end of your duck off. The "duck" was probably a common murre or a cormorant. Great white? Doubt it....They like seals and sea lions and when they want to come up for a hit they explode out of the water like nothing else.

Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4YjmwCs6H0

I was surfing the mouth of the Klamath River this week and saw more activity in the water than I ever have anywhere. I knew it was a sharky spot, but as I was unsuiting a guy pulled up and we got to talking. I said it felt sharky. He then proceeded to tell me that he has been attacked twice surfing there, and showed me the scars on his leg and his hip. He suggested its best to go get a few waves and come in. I would have to agree. Its easy to tell when your in the water whether a place is sharky or not.

Fuck that place... You defiantely would not find me anywhere close to there, unless only the friendly sharks species roam down there. Wink

That's exactly why you've gotta pack your full auto Glock in your harness (kiting) though. At least then if one decides to clamp onto you, you just have to pull a trigger.
