Go with a 12 flat kite & a bigger board! I've got 12 waroo in perfect shape for sale for cheap in the classifieds. |

Yeah shay is right... We've ridden the 12m Waroo and 14m Contra on Glides in basically no wind. No reason to go bigger than 14m anymore. |

Does every post need to be a podium for small-kite snobbery?
If my biggest kite was a 14M I would've been cryin my eyes out last Saturday night. Flat or not, glide or not. Instead I was perfectly powered on my 20m, smackin some big shiny waves on my board of choice!
Stop the insanity! Big Kites Rule!

Slither, how fast does that 20m turn though? I guess it doesn't really matter if you're riding that light of wind anyways, huh? |

Slither I realize big guys and big kites go together like chocolate and peanut butter, but you gotta get rid of that beast!
Old & Busted: 20m + TT
New Hotness: 14m + Glide (Sauvies) or Surfboard/Skimboard (Coast)

I must agree, I'm a big guy too. and I like nothing less then pumping and riding big kites, go with a 14 or a 15 and get another board. SOMETHING BIG AND FLOATY. You will be able to creat apparent speed with a smaller kite and more float. Hence being more effiecent and being able to go bigger. |

Yeah wish me luck after your big-kite smear campain!
Yeah, bigger kites turn slower, but is "kite-turning" really what it's all about? My 20m turns plenty fast enough to boost and go down the line.
Riding bigger boards is nothing new, but do you really want to troll around on a fridge door or some big strapless thing when you could be having a real session? I love my 7ft surfboard, but I reckon it only buys me a meter or 2.
I'm not promoting "pumping" big kites. I saying there's nothing bad about a big kite when the conditions warrant. It's physics.
Hear me now and believe me later. Come on, there has to be some other Big Rag enthusiasts out there! Stand up! |

You bet Slither - speaking for Onad because he must be away from the computer working (new Intel demands!): Onad is ~210lbs and I don't think he would have gotten more than a couple of days in at Sauvie's without his 17.5 Machine AND skim. It's just physics as Slither mentioned. For the coast and Sauvie's, big kites are a must, even with a skim or Glide. - Tonski |

Maybe we should have a lightwind challenge.
20m Torch / 17.5m Machine + TT
vs.
12-13m kite + Glide

I'd be happy to enter . . . Seems like I'm always out on my 16m or 19m with my TT when others are yanking it and spanking it on the beach; wishing they had a bigger kite and/or board.
Yes, having a board quiver is important, more so than having more kites, but the big kites are a must for the northern coast and SI. . . |

Well I am 215 lbs dry and I haven't kited on anything bigger than my 12m waroo since I got it. Granted that kite has ridiculous low end, but still. With a Glide and the 12m Waroo I am out and staying upwind when most other folks are out on 18+. Granted I may not be able to boost big, but you can still do tricks like frontrolls/backrools/ and crash doing backroll-kiteloops |

Pkh, you'd have to have weight categories in the challenge, right? I think the big guys are saying regardless of board (Glide, TT, or Skim), they still need a big ass kite in light wind. So, is the challenge for medium size guys in light wind?
Kodiak, aren't you talking about the Gorge? Above posts were talking about N. Coast and Sauvie's - light wind spots. |

Hey pkh, be sure to account for the rider's weight differences for an apple to apple comparison in your lightwind challenge.
I’ll bring some dive weights you can strap on to even you out with Slither.
Board edging and speed preferences are a factor in kite size section as well.
The 17.5 turns fast enough for kite loops. Seen Ben ripping off loops left & right on his 17.5 at the coast. Also, seen Barfly throw loops on his 20 Machine.
I prefer to rig big (for the lulls). Small kites are just a passing fad...
Seems that you want to rig down a little bit when throwing un-hooked stuff though. ~D

My 15m and 19m fuel are collecting dust since I got a 12 waroo. At a buck fifty it is fun on the 19 in stupid light wind but the 5.6 surfboard and 12 waroo are more fun. |

How about Kodiak vs. Dano / Slither ?
I'll jump in too with the dive weights, though I'd better get a vest so I don't sink out there! |
