I am trying to get some time on the water with my girlfriend (beginner) at some safe spots (shallow-water), to get her more comfy with the board. It looks like the sensors are saying a south wind at 15 or so...

I was curious if anyone had some input on the ponds at Ft. Stevens, or if you know of a place that might go in the Gorge.

Thanks.

Hit and miss at Ft Stevens. Best at parking lot D on the pond side. There might be some rain mixed. As always, watch the tides and don't get stuck offshore when it's ebbing hard. That being said, the ponds can be very nice at most tides in S/SW winds and from most directions will blow you back towards the spit in the event you go down... unless you are well off the spit. Then it can blow you into the channel, which is not good.

Have fun!

They are inland, check the map out in Spots: http://www.nwkite.com/guides/sunset_beach/

...but you can quickly find yourself "outland" if you get out into the channel - it's not so bad, just watch yourselves and get a tide book for the region. Make sure you aren't kiting after about two hours past high tide.

in my experience those s. wind forecasts are nowhere near as reliable as the summer-ish N wind forecasts. as a result the guys that live on the coast are able to jump on it when the getting is good (and there might be a brief window before the wind dies or the rain starts). if you are inland kiter you will often be making the drive in vain...

for me the drive is too painfull to undertake without a high probability of success, but if your going to the coast anyway then you might get lucky.

don't tack out too farther then you can swim, that S. wind can be finicky. yesterday the N wind dropped 10 knots in a hearbeat but i still had enough ktie to get back to the beach. the S wind is worse in my opinion, it can really die.
