Hi All,

I'd love your input on dream spots- places you've been, or heard about, or studied on Google, etc. As we're a wandering yacht, we're contrained by wind, current, and cyclone season, but not much else. The general plan is: Year 1- Caribbean and South Pacific, Year 2- South Pacific and Micronesia (Gilberts, Phoenix, Carolines, Philippines), Year 3- Vietnam, Australasia, Year 4- Indian Ocean (Maldives, Seychelles, Madagascar, E Coast Africa), Year 5 Indian Ocean and Red Sea.

We've sailed much of the South Pacific and Australasia, have some good beta on the Caribbean, and will not give away prize spots, but some general ideas would be highly appreciated! Love to work them into the schedule if at all possible. The expedition is all about finding the unknown, but hitting a dream wave or wild downwinder never hurts!

Here's a pic of year one (see our itinerary for details):

As of right now... 1.) Coche, Venezuela 2.) Fuerteventura 3.) Fortaleza, Brazil... and there's probably more, but those places look awesome!

Sunset Beach Oregon.
Downwinder from the Iredale to Del Ray with a surfboard, 12 meter and side off NE winds and a head high swell. Riding with friends.

Bonfire and beers at night.
Go home to my own bed.

Okinawa, Vietnam, Thailand, Costa Rica, Venezuela, most island in the caribean, mexico,

hmmm, anywhere with warm water and wind, and a big beach is always nice. Very Happy

You could follow Japan all the way down throught the Phillipines, Indonesia, Malasia, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia etc. That would be a GREAT trip and you'd never be more than 100nm from shore for the most part in case of typhoon you could get in the lee of an island and/or safe anchorage. I've often thought of this trip on a medium sized boat with a shallow draft for coral heads. Have fun, wish I had the time. Wink

Oooh- that Japan downwinder sounds about right. Typhoon season is a terror through there these days, but that a lot of spots to hit. The other area that would be incredible, but a long ways out of the flight plan is Chile- my god, imagine cruising that coast. Peru...Oh, too many spots!

OK, Alaska Airlines now flys to both La Paz, and Cancun (Cozumel). I'm going to one of them in November.... Which one is best for a perennial beginner kiteboarder? I really need to get past this stage of development.
I have spent several winter vacations in La Ventana in the "other sport", but never been to Cozumel. I do remember with LV some folks crashing in the places down-wind where there was injuries from the sea urchin beds, Seems like not the best thing for my many hours of walk of shame time.

Really I could think of all kinds of exotic places to spend months on end, but if my friends weren't with me than it wouldn't be much fun.

The most realistic I think would be to be in the Florida Keys Oct-April, and here the rest of the year.

Western Oz would be my less realistic Oct-April destination.... Very Happy

Indonesia, mauritius, cape verde, north shore of maui and oahu in winter, w. australia, chile all look good and are on the list. I probably wouldn’t leave here during jun-aug though. I don’t understand traveling for flat water, unless your goal is just to extend the season and sip tropical drinks as part of your annual vacation.

West OZ- if you can do it, go for it. We spent the summer there (Nov-April) two season's ago- it is insane. Huge, wicked white sand beaches the whole coast, insanely reliable winds, great community. About the only drawback- big whities take down a surfer or two every year, so don't spend a lot of time tea baggin'!
