So I went down to Coos Bay to see a couple college friends and figured trying to kite a bit on the coast while id be down there. Ive only kited on the columbia at a few different spots so the whole coast/surf thing was going to be a first for me. I grabed my gear and drove down from portland. To make a short story even shorter I kited for only about 30 minutes and decided that a board leash was extreamly necessary seeing that I had a bitch of a time trying to retrieve it.. I think ill probably use my old bigger board too next time (was on a 145 ono hammer). The wind was parallel to the coast line which was also kinda strange. Does anyone from the coast have any ideas on where I should kite on the this fall? I heard manzi was good but thats gonna be a bit north for me, Im going to be in corvallis.. so closest to newport. also what kind of wind conditions are best for the coast, directly on shore or a diagonal on shore?
So I pretty much concluded that Im going to put a surf board leash on my biggest twin tip kiteboard... and maybe some heel loops. any replies would be great.

What's up! I take it you go to Oregon State or LBC then? I've got a couple terms left at OSU, so I'll be down there aswell, but we (JP a.k.a. importracer9 99 - who will only be down there Winter & Spring) always shoot over to Newport (South Beach/Jetty) and Lincoln City (Siletz) during the school year to ride. Can't wait till the wind turns around and ramps up like crazy! Definately thinking about a 5m Switchblade or something now...

I want Onepump, but for a kite that I wouldn't be using all the time, it's not that big of a deal. Just want something for those crazy 40+ days. Figure a 5, 9, 12 or 14 quiver is what I'm going to shoot for. Keeping the Fuels too since I'd get $100 if I sold them. How much is that 5m? Wink

Ya im at OSU, im a sophmore tho so i gota lot more terms left.. =(
is a 10m c to big for newport? Im a lil over 200 and I felt a little over powered @ coosbay with the 14m and a little under powered with the 10m but the wind wasnt nukin i think it was around 20mph. and when I was coming in on a wave a felt even more overpowered. kinda hard to judge what kite to use.

Oh cool, cool! And as far as the kite sizes, it's hard to say. The wind varies a lot over there. You'll get those calm 15-20 days, then those sweet 25-30 days, then even more during the winter months... Last year we went out expecting ~30kts. (what iKite was showing), but when we arrived it was gusting over 50... I'd say figure ~20-25 on average for Fall (estimating).

I've posted this several times now, but incase you haven't seen it... it's just a glimpse of how crazy it can get during winter!

i remember seeing kiters in the bay doing downwinders....

i was on the 101 bridge and watching them go parallel to the bridge heading south thru the bay and down to guano rock.

that place sucks ,
but is doable when there is nothing else and usually foggy everywhere else
One time a few yrs. ago a pal Jason and Tom S., from Coos bay had 101 traffic stopped because some lady in a R.V. said someone parchuted into the power lines
