Sun Aug 06, 06 7:17 am Squamish Oil Spill - Site closed for the season |

A tanker ruptured one of it's diesel tanks in the mouth of the sound today. There were kiters in the water during the event and more details can be found below in the links. It is going to be a tough time for the Vancouver/Squamish community, the spit is closed until further notice.

That REALLLY sucks. Wasn't there a big toxic spill into the Squamish River just last year as well? It's truly a shame to see such a pristine area repeatedly ruined by industry. It makes me wonder if these incidents are just bum luck or if Canada needs to beef up its requirements to protect the environment.

this is horrendous. sorry to hear about the spill...especially considering that the spit is closed for the season.
where else do you guys kite up there? i am heading that direction on wednesday with bikes and kites in hand. i would prefer to be in the water so any leads on your next favorable kite spots would be huge. |
