Still working on a surf/skim hybrid for the big swells and surf.
Here's a preliminary model of a Hein 4-6 SwellPig shown next
to my current strapless ride (a 5-11 Rusty Project)

The Pig is a quad that's 18 wide and 1 5/8 thick. Short for travel
and so it fits in steep swells and shorebreak. Flat-ish rocker
with lots of nose kick. A convex entry into V'd double concave.
How do you like it?

what will you do for padding? most of the guys that ride short surfboards here are just waxing them |

Interesting. It seems to be the same length as the surfchip, which I now have a lot of time on in both swells and waves. Big nose rocker is definitely key. I have had a number of nasty wipeouts on steep wave drops (especially the shorebreak stuff) when I stuff the nose, which takes a lot of concentration not to do. I actually think adding a bit more length in the nose, as well as the rocker would help. I don’t see any downside to that. This is the main thing I would like changed on the surfchip, because it seems to catch when you feel like you are getting the most aggressive ride on the biggest, best waves. Apart from that, I’m impressed how well it works for me in the waves. I’ve been riding it instead of the surfboard most of the time, but I still use that in smaller waves and the skim in even smaller waves. It would be nice to use really small surf fins on it so you can ride it in the shallower water, and for less drag.
Needs a better name. |

straps, yes, but why? Full soft top would be the ticket.

Maybe I'll make it a inch or two longer but I
want it to fit in a bag with my 135 twin.
I like Pig, -cause she's kinda fat and I'm hoping
I can cut some lines shaped like a pigs curly tail
with it. |

| Inserts for straps would only add value to it, even if not used. I haven’t used straps for something like 15 months now, but this weekend I got to see two real wave experts, and I started reconsidering. Sky and some slingshot guy (australian I think) were doing these unbelievable high speed, half airborn, floaty shreds right off the lip and the perfectly timed curl. That left me scratching my head in awe and thinking about straps for occasional use. Because the board is small, it would be good for this high speed stuff and well matched with straps it seems. If nothing else, good training wheels to learn new stuff. |

| have you thought about tapering the rail thickness? thicker like a surfboard up front for more float and surfy, and thinner in the back for more bite when edging? just an idea. |

Thin surfboard style rails is how I have it
modeled. Soft and tucked in front becoming
thinner and sharper towards the tail. |

Anybody know anything about that HUGE surf/kiteboard that has been sitting in 2nd wind sports for eternity? The thing is like 6' long, almost absurdly long. I keep thinking it would be fun to play around with on dead Sauvie days or perhaps at the coast.
I know virtually nothing about wave boards. |

Kiting with ANY surfboard really fun and a new thing to do (flatwater or waves). I use my 9' longboard, my 6'10" surfboard and skims in lots of conditions. The 6-10 has offered many good wave sessions, big to small, soft to heavy winds. There is no "absurdly" long IMO and after trying a Stretch board, I would say that it is absurdly short and thin (get a twin)... in the middle is something like the Pig (maybe a bit longer, say 5-10 to 6-0). The idea with surfing is that you can depower the kite and continue to surf (not remained all powered up... that's kiteboarding). Bigger/wider/thicker boards allow you to surf. Hein and the new kitesurf boards are finding the lowest volume and length of board to support the vision.
Buy any surfboard and have fun...used is good. You will likely dent the shit out of it or break it anyway. California surf shops are full of consignment grom surfboards (5-5+) for like $80-150... if you know anyone down there, might be a good call.  |
