It was blowing 12 ssw at PDx airport, anyone think about catching rooster on a west wind is possible later in the evening? Or every for that matter.

I'm thinking about heading to Vancouver Lake after work as well. People claim lots of skunkage there but I had a great day on a south wind last year.

Any thoughts?

I think I am going to aim about 60 miles east of there, but good luck!

Hey how is Vancouver Lake any how? It'd be nice to get a writeup on it... we need a winter kiting guide I think. Especially now that we got these flat kites, I think it will open a lot more possibilities for kiting (safely) in the winter.

Yes I would like to know where on Vancouver lake you can launch from, but on an South wind you might as well go to Frenchman's Bar

Have you had any success at Frenchman's bar - it looks like if the wind is SW like it is now it would line up a nice fetch down the Willamette and across the Columbia - the 405 bridge flags have been squirrelly looks a bit light

Only when I got my first kite have I flown there. Iwas still learning and didn't know anything about wind direction where to ride etc.

I have been there when the wind seemed good Southerly direction, but normally it was followed by a big black cloud of rain and was by myself so I choose not to ride.

I lanuched near the boat launch area in the widlife reserve. You head west on La Frambois road and it dead ends into the lake. This is on the southern edge of the main portion fo the lake. There is a large sand spit that you can safely rig and launch from. The main diificulty is that the area directly south of the launch site is vegetated with willow thickets that can choke the wind out until you get onto the body of the lake. I ahve scoped out other launch sites (like the golf course near the yacht club) but never really came up with any suitable site.

The downside is that Vancovuer Lake is fairly nasty.

How is Frenchman's bar anyways, I've never been.

I have launched from Wintler park in the couv which is essentially right across the river from the airport. There is a decent beach and no crowds.

i have ridden there in despiration. its nastay. sure its windy and the water is flat but i dont want flesh eating disease. frenchmans bar is pretty dangerous. currents are wierd as hell and the wind is funky. but.. its really close if you live in vancouver. there is a much better spot nearby though but you have to be willing to explore a bit to find it... plus it only works when the water is low

Just for the record...

yes, the fecal coliform amounts exceed water quality standards in Vancouver lake. Which is pretty shag nasty. But I don't even want to think about what's floating past Sauvie's right now.

Has anyone tried Yale Lake just south of MT Saint Helens? During the summer when NW winds fire up that lake gets plenty of wind. Nice clean mountain water and always seems to have plenty of beach. It's on my list of places to explore this summer.

I have also wondered if Yale would be good. I know there are alot of stumps and sand bars in the middle of the lake to avoid. It also looks cold and gusty.

Anyone have first hand experience?
