Is the coast a bad place to learn? And what kind of board works the best, would a short board like a 143 work or would a ss surf 157 be good? |

It's definately going go to take longer to learn if you haven't even ridden in flat water yet. However, if you can already ride decent in river/lake conditions, then it'll probably take you a bit to learn, but you'll get it a lot faster. Also, the size of your board really depends on your size, style, etc. You can get away with a much smaller board (we ride 120's in the surf), but it's definately more work... Just my $0.02 though! |

I'm in complete agreement with Kataku . If you haven't really ridden much (can't get up on a plane, transition, etc.) then I'd stick to the flat water. Floras lake is a great place to learn if you don't want to hassle with the crowds. Go give a shout out to Will and for a small fee (or a twelve pack) he'll keep an eye on you and has a jetski to grab you if you get in trouble. I've had a few friends try and learn in the ocean and it's been nothing but a frustrating for them. They would be killing it by now if they took the time to learn on flat water safely. Just keep in mind if you decide to brave the ocean, every second you ride out is a minute swimming back. |

Yea, JP's always on his Misfit 123 and I've ridden his old SX 122 and Misfit out there plenty of times. We're definately NOT all that great out in the surf though, just more or less transitioning into riding the waves (didn't really ride the coast much until last year). We'll just have to see how our boards do as we get better at "sitting" on the wave... And as soon as my freakin' Pro-X 128 comes in (hopefully first thing next week), I definately want to get out to the coast and see how it does!!! |
