Okay not that I am retiring any time soon, but its a fun thing to ponder over.
Where would you say is the best place to retire? Lets assume that you want to spend your summers in the NW (because its awesome in the summer) but you are tired of the cold winters and want to be some place warm for half the year.
In my mind: Must have waves, must have flat water, must be warm, must be fairly affordable (no private islands in the south pacific.) Must have good winds Sept-March.
What do you think? |

Plus you can start working on your new language skills nice and early.
I know from experience that living on an island gets OLD even if its in paradise. I know that seems counter intuitive, but rock fever hit me like a brick after two years in the tropics. But then again if you are gonna do the snowbird routine, it might never get old.
I think there are probably plenty of good options in SA, but you'd want to get a good feel for the political and social stability of the places you consider.
As long as you are a nice guy, integrate with the locals and have a similar lifestyle, and treat the locals like you'd want to be treated, then you can usually do fine just about anywhere.
My youngest kid, who is Jewish, spent about 2 months living in Palestine a couple of years ago. He showed proper respect and had a positive attitude and he was treated just fine. In fact people went out of their way to treat him well.

if he get's tired of that destination, just pull the anchor up and go to a new adventure.

I second what Dunes said. I was in the Peace Corps in the PI and lived on a small little island. It really was fantasy island, huge mountain in the middle, decent coral reefs, super clean and clear rivers (we used to snorkel and spear shrimp). Was soo amesome..for the first 4-5 months then I was completely bored senseless.
Maybe it will be different when I'm older, but living in a pace where everything is different: climate, language, food, culture wears on you.
That said, I love thailand. |

As a wind junkie I've been lucky enough to work in SA for the past 5 years so I suggest you learn habla Espanol because it opens up new undeveloped regions of affordable paradise that are quickly becoming more expensive as technology has transitioned the world into a global economy. If you work via internet connectivity....you can pull it off quite easily. Timezone change are a benefit and the wind typically picks up in the afternoon....so work early...kite daily!
Also, every 8 seconds a baby boomer retires so do the math on Mexico pricing in the last 5-10 years and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the American herd will spread EVERYWHERE. How many of you La Ventana guys cringe at what you could of bought just a few years ago??  Taxes are another item to consider...how many days you spend in the US compared to offshore can be very valuable because global tax liability can be a beautiful thing as the US transitions into a love fest with your money. The Oregon beer tax alone was enough for me to say "C - ya!".
Last, all you YOUNG madre culeado's on this forum should think about it NOW because your payment will be about the same as that new car you want. Figure it will be your own future pension fund/ 401k of fun for 4-6 months a year when you're not throwing down hard at the Sandbar during the summers.

great question
so many seek answers
no real obvious choice
just being able to do what you want
when you want it
is a good life,
so few get it.
I get bored too fast for one way or another
just keep rollin with the punches
I haven't done any real work that amounts to anything for the last 10 yrs.
But now am building a large warehouse to rent out
while not really fun ,it keeps me interested
as it's the best time in 10 yrs. to build
and there's no place on my agenda
exceptin maybe Puerto Rico which is looking pretty nice
if not too overun |

If you are planning on only 6 months of the year then why pick one place? Pick a new place every year until you find one you can't stand missing out on.
