John-

At I guess, I'd say you aren't steam bending, but I don't see staples to the strongback either. What's pulling the rocker into the strips; is the the case that gluing and clamping is sufficient to set the shape? The crosswise lines don't really seem structural but they are certainly intriguing.

I'm also a looking forward to seeing your rails... I know on my canoe I had the inner stems set and beveled before I stripped it... then added the outer stems. Are you maybe considering some sort of post-stripping spline operation or are you planning a complete wrap around on the rails?

Finally, 1/4" strips"?

Looking truly, truly excellent. Enjoy!

John

No steam bending yet; I have used a heat gun before to loosen up the fibers for certain curves, but so far so good.

I use a glue-gun to temp. tack the strips onto the ribs, (I'll take a pic of it)
The wires are to clamp the strips together; I was hoping the pictures would show that.
I've started the rails, first strips at a 15% bevel, and yeah narrow 3/8"

Should have some more pic's in a few days.

thanks,
John

Not sure what your are reffering to "a good seal"; I'm using Titebond II wood glue and will be using Epoxy for the seal coat before glassing.

More pic's; the rails are started and I will be running the deck at the same time.
Wish I had a soild day to put in, it's just been an hour here and there.

enjoy Wink

Very nice John! I'm glad you used your "day" efficiently, we didn't miss much at Stevenson yesterday, but it's time to drag your butt back out on the water! Looking forward to seeing the project soon...Pete

Nice work, kitesail! Very impressive. Curious though, did you end up using a liquid foam anywhere in the board like you had menioned you might do earlier?

Yeah she's a beauty! I think my wife is jealous (she hasn't seen me lately)Laughing

Can't wait Exclamation Hope to see ya sometime soon. (you can take a spin on it)

No foam yet; I wanted to see what she weighs hollow first. It's 4.5lbs as is, and I can stand anywhere and it feels soild. (I'm pretty stoked) I will be injecting foam when I route out the plugs for the boxes.

rePete -
Oh good; I didn't even check the wind; didn't want to know what I'd be missing Wink

Some finish sanded pic's.

john,
very nice work!
thanks for the "step by step" visual experience.
It's like looking over your shoulders watching you make it.
I look forward to seeing it in action.
you are a craftsman indeed.

Beautiful work John! Thanks for taking the time to get the pics and share it with us.

Curious as to how the fin boxes will work as I'm not catching any extra re-enforcement in the tail. Will they be secured through the top deck or just glassed in from the bottom?

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Tony

That looks really cool.
I once injected some foam, just a teeny little bit of foam....
For me it was a gamble, I didn't test the expansion or have enough vent holes,
snap, crackle POP! Needed a router and a new deck to finish the build....
You seem like a more experienced craftsman, but beware the foam nonetheless.
I'm still a little shy of it, having learned the hard way to test the expansion carefully.
Your board will be a beauty.

Stringy –
Your welcome…..I must say that’s one of the cool features of the web “sharing” like you do with your awesome photography. Cool

Bill –
Thank you; that means a lot coming from a person so well versed in your own craft, I’ll certainly take you up on the offer! Laughing

Tonyb –
Looks like you had a great time in Ventana, keep up the family stoke!
Should have some pic’s soon of the re-enforcement once I route out the boxes.

Bwd –
Thanks for the tips!
Were you injecting liquid foam into an epoxy board with pre-existing foam, did it have a wood deck? Confused

I am going to take caution by putting a prep coat of epoxy on before routing the boxes and plugs. This should bond the whole surface really well. (Will do a test though)
