Mon Sep 15, 08 2:43 pm Tips on Knotted Line? |
|
|
Akkk!
I ended up with a knot in one of my farily new control lines this weekend at Floras. I didn't catch it until I had actually ridden on it and pulled it up tight. Before I try to play with it, I am wondering if there are any tips or practices anyone could advise? Is it best to just leave it? Replace it? or try to open it up?
Thanks,
Scot |

Definitely try to un-knot it. A knot will make your line much more prone to breaking-- not good/safe.
I have had decent luck using a tiny eyeglasses screwdriver to get into the knot, if you can manage to loosen it up just a bit it will become pretty easy to untie.
Good luck. |

My advice would be to just leave it, especially since you said the lines were fairly new. The last thing you would want to have is a new set of lines except for 1/4 inch where you frayed things when trying to get a knot out.
....okay, if you decide to remove it, I would use a needle and try not to pick at it too much. Good luck. |

Get the knot wet, put in on a firm surface, and slam hard with rubber hammer. It took me about 5 minutes to undo one knot. _________________ just wear sunscreen |

Word...hammer method is confirmed. Takes awhile, but works well without damaging the integrity of the line. _________________ Order your copy of Present Tense today at http://cineaptic.bigcartel.com/product/present-tense-dvd |

Seriously? Isn't this doing more damage than good? Or...the potential to do more? |

I wet the line and then use the needle approach. I think either way you look at it, hammering it or using a needle probably isn't good for your line, but it is better than the knot. _________________ MS |

also i could be wrong but i am under the impression that a line with a knot is substantially weakened thus leaving it is not a good option? |

the line strength is reduced by half if you have a knot.
You need to suck on it,....something about saliva, Then bite on it....gently, And as it gets loose you can WORK IT!.....slip right in and get that knot _________________ I stretch my wings and pull the strings |

Not so with un-sleeved Spectra line. More like a 70% reduction in strength. Wet the knot, beat it with a rubber hammer to get the knot out. |

You guys are awesome! Thanks for the many replies and tips. I went for the suck-n-chew and was shocked how fast the knot gave up. Line looks fine too.
Thanks for the help!

I found an overhand knot in my rear right-hand line from RR last weekend and the chew method worked great. Gotta love the low tech solutions.
Slightly off topic, how much visible wear does one accept before replacing lines?

Great info. Used wet line with rubber hammer. Then leather pin( Micheals) and very small pliers(Harbor Freight) . After the first knot the other two knots where easy. |
