Hello everybody,

My wife and I are looking for a spot to take our VW camper in early June where we can a) take lessons, b) camp for free (or DIRT cheap), and c) stay for as long as the wind is good or until the spirit moves us. I've considered the Gorge, Padre island, and La Ventana as possibilities and have found some promising info for camping on the Columbia and PI but, I think that there MUST be super cheap or free camping in La Ventana. Since it seems like lots of members on this fourm have actually BEEN there I am hoping for some good advice and/or leads.

Thanks alot! Smile

La Ventana usually shuts down in March & it would be super hot in June, more of a winter hotspot.

I was also told by the Ventana locals that the bugs come out during the hot no wind summer.

Thanks for the replies. Very Happy Maybe the gorge is the way to go.... closer to where we are right now too. I've read about the crowded conditions on summer weekends. How is it on summer weekdays? Is it usally good thru end of sept?

Thanks again for the info!

It is hard to beat oregon in the summer. The gorge is sweet (no wetsuit) and the coast is fantastic. Lots of options within a couple of hours. The sandbar gets busy, but you can always find some open water by going upwind a few reaches.

with all respect to my brothas and sistas in the gorge, it is a furken crazy place to try to learn: crowed, kitelines everywhere, gusty as hekk, huge rollers, deep water if you are learning to stay upwind, barges, did i mention crowded?

floras is less frenetic but gets busy as well, and some of the pole-boarders there are mean as hell.

spi in the summer, or corpus would be a dream for a newbie-wide open beaches, flatwater, nothing down wind.

if you are going to take lessons in the gorge, try jimmy dorsey at kiteboardoregon 503-407-5130 for non corporate one on one lessons and down wind jet boat support.

imho

Will at Floras is a super friendly guy who'll often lend a hand to the newbies even if they aren't his students. Hook up with some lessons from Will and he'll keep the "mean" poleboarders from eating you up.

Weekdays it isn't super crowded anyway.

I'm sure SPI, Hatteras, etc. might be nice to learn as well, but if you are in PacNW anyway then Floras is a pretty stellar place to park an RV and learn some basics.
