I have talked with the ODFW sauvie island manager about doing a beach clean up and it turns out that it is pretty easy to set up.

I know that it is short notice but I want to set up a clean up for next week. The beach gets pretty damn hammered on the 4th of July weekend. It was a complete zoo last year.

For reasons I will explain later, I think it is very important that we establish a positive presence at the island.

What I don't want to happen is set this up and have like 3 people come out.

Who can commit to coming out to the island around 5 or so next week? I'm thinking the later part of the week like wens or thursday. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Brian

Count me in. Got nothing but kiting on the books for a while so I would love to put in some time cleaning up the spot.

Earliest I could do is prob 6 next week due to some training. How long u think it'll take? Will there be time for kiting? If there will maybe we could set up a 2-3 day wind window and go when the odds are best for wind.

I'm in! This will be my 3rd clean up of the kite beach so far this year.

We cleaned up the bottles, cans and general punctured floaty toy and busted styrofoam cooler trash from the 100 degree weekend last nite, but I imagine it will be just as trashed again after the 4th of July.

I always keep a costco sized roll of garbage bags in my pathfinder if anyone ever wants some for beach clean up.

I think we need to petition ODFW to ban glass from the beach. I hate regulations, but I've picked up several broken bottles this year, and I don't want me or anyone else to find one with their feet or kite.

Here's the current regs:

Can we schedule it once the extended forecast can guide our selection? Perhaps schedule this Monday?

yeah, I'll call reserve manager and say, hey, ummm we really want to clean up the beach and show that the kiteboard community is active and cares about this place but ummm, ya know, we don't want to commit to any specific date --cause, well cause we don't want to drive out here and not kiteboard.

I realize you need to schedule a big flat bed truck to come pick up the garbage that we collect and you have a million other responsibilities managing a state owned wildlife area, but frankly I don't mind making it more difficult for you cause I really want it to be windy when we pick up the trash.

Well, shit, I didn't realize we needed so much preparation to clean up some trash from the beach. Couldn't we just dump the trash somewhere on the way off the island? Anyway, just schedule whenever.

I'd love to help next week.

I am exceptionally new to the sport but would love to lend a hand as I will probably be kiting out there quite a bit - once I have my shit on lock of course! Embarassed

We normally would do that Gene but PDXMB is trying to get ODFW sauvie island manager to come. It's important that we create a good relationship with him to prevent problems in the future.

PDXMB just let us know the ODFW gets back to you and I will be there for sure(wind or not) Very Happy

Thanks for clarifying Nicole. I guess I'm just not smart enough to keep up with Brian's master plan on my own.

The local Sheriff for Sauvie Island, Larry Weaver, came up to me today and told me that his daughter really wants to learn to kiteboard. She's going to be visiting him tomorrow (4-July). He asked if I would teach her how to kite. I told him I'd be happy to teach her how to fly a trainer kite, but that I'm pretty much a beginner myself.

Anyway, getting in good with the local Sheriff couldn't hurt our image either Smile

If anyone with skills wants to help instruct her let me know.
