Last night was a classic super lightwind-barely-doable-downwind-current-lots-of-walks-of-shame kind of night at Sauvies. A number of lightwind weapons were deployed: Slingshot Machines 17.5m and 20.5m, Best Nemi 04 16m, LF Spectrum 17m. The real hit of the night though was the boards: Cabal SX 51 Skimboard, and two Slingshot Glide 149x46 boards.

As soon as you rode one of these two boards it became obvious that kite size or type didn't really matter all that much, it was all the board. The Skim and Glide were the difference between barely planning and going straight downwind, or riding around feeling pretty powered and having fun. If I rode the Glide I could stay upwind on my 13m no problem. But even with a 20m kite on a regular board I could hardly plane.

My review on the boards themselves... Well talking to Jeff and Amery, and trying it myself, the Glide definitely has more low end and upwind ability than a skimboard. However I think that you can still make a skimboard work in the same wind (you just won't go upwind as fast), and with wind that light the skimboard becomes more fun anyway because its so different. The skim is also a lot cheaper, $350 versus $750 for the Glide. I think you could probably make a "Ghetto Glide" out of some plywood pretty easy.

So I'd say go with Skim for more fun, or Glide for more low end (and if you feel like you absolutely need straps and fins.)

Thanks to Amery, Jason, and Karl for letting me bum their gear! I have been putting it off for a year now, but now I am getting a skim board ASAP!

Thanks for the info PKH! What were the water conditions? I'm just wondering how the Glide would be in choppy water? If the wind picked up, would you have to come in and change boards? Seems like it would be a great board... Very Happy

Nak -
The Glide is definitely a lightwind only board. Its not made for chop or holding down lots of kite in more wind. That said I never had any trouble with the occassional boat wake or when things did get more choppy. Its a pretty smooth board.

The great thing about lightwind boards versus kites though is that you just put both on the beach and you can switch without even putting down your kite! And since you can use a medium sized kite even in lightwinds, when the wind comes up 10mph you are ready for it.

Sure beats the heck out of pumping up multiple kites. Thumb's Up

for anyone who's comparing wind on the water to the sensors - from 4 pm to 6pm it was averaging about 12kts, lulls 10 gusts to 13.5. By 6:30 it dropped to average about 9.5, 8 lulls 11 top.

Did anyone measure the wind on the beach at sauvies?

Don't forget about SX 151 it is the best all round board on the market. Light wind killer that is fun to ride.

Bar-none. Just to let you know.

I like Mark's group-buy idea for the SX51. I know one Cabal employee that I think would be a good contact for us.

Will we call ourselves Team Toe Splinter?
We could use TravisBickleRex's ugle-azz toe photo for our code-of-toes.

I tried the flysurfer door 158 and this strange looking outline like snowboards rides so nice in the lightwinds and flat water..this board just wants to head upwind with little effort.i made one for myself out of plywood 1/2" with no glass and the board work out just as good as the production even with all the flex in it because had no glass for stiffnes, just an hour on it and cracked.. Sad the board was totaly flat and 1.5 fins on the heel side.looking to build another one with pvc and epoxy/glass just for those light days.the only thing i didnt like was that the nose did catch in chop.

Save your money

Get an Anomaly wood 150X46

If the kite can fly without stalling, you can ride upwind

I weigh 160 and can ride this board with a 19M 04 Fuel in 7mph, up wind in flat water.
In 1.5' chop, I can ride upwind in 9mph.

Board cost 240 including shipping

Using the bathroom scale, holding the board above my head.

The board adds 11 lbs.

Not super light, ehhh, but still gets you out for about half the money.

Anybody know how much the GLIDE weighs?
I'm curious. I was considering getting one, too, if I find one on "fire" sale.

Anyway, my friend who is a bigger rider, was throwing front 540 boost spins as usual, with the Anomaly, but for me, the weight is more of a factor.

Also, I ride 04 SX boards normally, which are really light, where as he rides the LF Drop 138, which seems much heavier.
