Mon Jul 29, 19 10:36 am Jones Beach today? |
|
|
So I'm not a Jones Beach kiter much. Last time I kited there was probably 8 years ago, maybe 10.
I love Jones for its wide open beach and strong wind. However, it really only has chop, one swell wave over in the alley, and the mud flat for flat water. I much prefer swell and or waves and so the reason I never go there anymore.
Does today/tonight look like a good day/evening to hit it?
Thanks for your input! |

Jones should be cranking today. Could be some decent swell in the alley |

Sadly I don’t go there very much either. I know a couple of great camp hosts out there, but I’m with Sasquatch on this. On a good note Its summer and it’s always windy there! |

Thanks all who chimed in.
The questions and post is more for my nephew who just started kiting.
Here is some info I was Pm'ed
""5.0 at 5 O'clock" is what we always said about Jones in the windsurfing days. Around 5ish is the magic hour with kite size between 12m and 9m
Look for a temperature gradient between Astoria and Kelso, or Portland of at least 10 degrees. It works best when Astoria is overcast with a cloud line just east and clear at Jones.
Jones is by far the easiest site to predict.
Launch in the wide sandy beach where you'll see tons of kiters:
