I'm looking for intel on the best beaches to kite on the central Oregon coast during winter fronts. How's Newport and or Florence that time of year?

I live right here in Newport so I know this area well. Storm winds are difficult to catch them good which means strong, steady and sustained with little or no rain during your session. If you are looking at the forecast models you want to see multiple gradient lines that are evenly spaced and consistent over several hours. 190 degrees or more is the ideal wind angle. Anything less than 190, then the wind is light near shore and gusty and goofy. Outgoing tide is the best for kiting in the surf as it tends to stretch the surf zone and create smooth water slicks between the line of whitewater. The shallower beaches like Agate and South Beach are best since there is no vicious shore break right at the waters edge and those spots have a long and gradual zone of smooth water before getting out to the deeper water where it gets very ragged and rough.

Plan on kiting by yourself as there are very few kiters that pursue the storm winds. If you do get lucky and catch the storm winds under ideal conditions, they can be super fun and exciting. Good luck and stay safe out there.
