Going on a trip to NC to Wilmington (wedding and triathalon). Going to head to Hatteras after for a few days, and gauging how long I'll need to get my fill in Hatteras. I'm hearing that Wrightsville beach in Wilmington might be a good spot. Anyone have any experience with this?

North of the north jetty in Wilmington at the mouth of Masonboro inlet is where most of the kiters go. This is the lower end of Wrightsville beach. On a kiteable day you will meet many kiters there who can give you the local 411. You are supposed to stay 100 ft away from the jetty.

If the wind and swell is right you can go around the jetties to the southside of the south jetty and get good waves. This is the north end of Masonboro island which is otherwise not easily accessible except by boat or swimming across the inlet. A very popular surf spot when there is swell.

The local kiting place I go to there is Blowing In the Wind http://www.blowinginthewind.com/

There are a bunch of good spots in the Willmington area. Go to http://www.gokitesurf.com/ There is a tab on the left that gives you the low down on some of the spots and weather. You can also call the shop on that webpage and they will point you in the right direction. The locals are super cool. I've kited the basin, the pond and the south jetty at Wrightsville beach. The pond is the best place that I have ever kited. Here are some pix of the basin and the south jetty.

Nice.

I never got to ride the basin despite checking it out on several occasions. The wind was never SW or W.

I have also never gotten good waves kiting south of the jetty but in years past I have surfed the hurricane swell of Masonboro. Really good.

My brother lives right behind Masonboro. It is a really awesome place and one of my favorites on the entire east coast.

Hope it blows for ya' Smile

Hatteras really is nice if you can maximize your time there. You can ride in any direction on a wide array of conditions and downwinders. There are very few access issues to worry about other than the recent bird closures. But for the most part, you're not dealing with lifeguard or beach restrictions. If you see wind, you can just about launch and ride anywhere you want.

The Wrightsville photos look nice. I have yet to kite there.

I'll be there the middle 2 weeks of September. Should be fun. Wrightsville for a week and Hatteras for a few days. I've heard September/Oct is awesome out there. Although Sept is so nice in the gorge too!

Thanks everyone for the advice on spots!
