Any theories on how much longer we can expect high water at the sandbar?

It'd be nice to have the big bar back... though the sketchy launching conditions do make for good peanut gallery fodder.

Related... Is this high water keeping Lyle closed? I was there 2 1/2 weeks ago to launch out of that little "bowling alley". But then Jonah went there later in the week and said even that was submerged, leaving nada for a launch.

Looks like flows are FORECAST to peak in about a week, but we won't see normal levels (like the mid-May levels) again until early July. Here's the link.

Forecasts are educated guesses. I don't know what NOAA's track record is for river forecast level accuracy.

That sucks. That launch will make a jackass out of just about everyone right now, crowded or not.

Up in the Wind river rec area last week scouting and the road signs were just starting to show, so that would mean around 6 ft or more, and that was between 3500-4000.

If we can get some nice wet storms, it could hurry things up, the jet stream is still in a good spring location to help that happen.

Cross your fingers.

Yeah I had my share of humbling the last couple of days.

First day - Get launched near the river mouth, make a snarky comment about my buddies kitemare and how maybe it had something to do with his brand of kite. Then proceed to jump on skim, wind dies, kite falls, I am drifting in 40 degree water trying to relaunch before my kite hits log and gets ripped to shreds.

Second day - Spend all morning laughing in the peanut gallery at bad launches. So then I decide to go out, get launched from hill, got my steezie ball cap on and my shorts down low, throw down skim and hop on, gust hits, I get off balance, skim flies out, I faceplant into shallow water/sand, kite tomahawks into water. Peanut gallery approves! Wink

Lesson learned: none, I will still do this stupid stuff next time. Very Happy

Phil,

Sorry to hear about your kite shredding. Just glad you're O.K.

Shredded kites are a bad deal. Is it fixable? But yeah, I'm liking this morning sesh idea, less people around to laugh at you.

Phil, I will post some pictures up tonight of the peanut gallery and some of the fun carnage. It was some good fun this weekend and a great start to whats to come for this summer in the Gorge.

I personally had a nice face plant coming into the shallows. Happens to the best of us. Was cracking up on all of the extreme confident as they pailed trying to get out in the Vortex of sugary goodness on the inside. Smile Hot launches were a hoot with many a tea baggings to behold. All in all, I had a great time hanging with all you folks from the Gorge and PDX. See you next weekend.
