but, it looks like they do recognize kiteboarding...check it out: free if it's...well, when is it free? if it replaces the 62 inch bag?
Surfboards, Kiteboards, Wakeboards One surfboard, Kiteboard, or Wakeboard $100
Exception:
Kiteboards and wakeboards and containers that are less than 62 linear inches and under 50 lbs. are free in place of 62 inch bag in the free allowance. 70 lbs
115 inches
- Acceptance conditional on aircraft size and load conditions
- Exception: If the Kiteboard/wakeboard is less than 62 linear inches and 50 lbs., the above conditions do not apply
- If this item is in excess of the number of pieces allowed in the free baggage allowance, excess baggage charges apply in addition to the $100 special items fee. |

| I've always wondered about the 62". Does that mean that it is calculated by length+width+height? If it is, I don't know of any boards that would make that. If it is just 62 linear inches, then that rocks. |

I fell asleep trying to read it. Don't make much sense to me. Sounds like at some times it costs more money than other times. Can anyone add to this? _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

Continental just went to $25 for a second bag weighing less than 50 lbs.
On the 62 inches I think it is the sum of L+H+W - and it's very hard to meet that length with a board bag. Somehow true golf bags are exempt from those dimensions. But that all may be changing.
May have to start traveling without a board and just rent a board when you get to your destination.

Yeah its complicated. UPS has a small metal cord with several knots in it. You go around the length then twist and go around the package. if you didn't meet both knots then you are undersized.... Or something like that...
All we need is a travel board that breaks down to a smaller size..
Hein.....
I saw one that comes from Europe. But with the $ to euro its over $1000 us. _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...

from zero prestige... who knows how old this board is!
Good Travel Board
That one had too much rocker and flex for its length so I kept cutting it shorter til it looked like this and rode really well. 60" long, 12" wide tips with cutouts 9" deep and wide. Good shape. I like these new cutout tips because it handles chop well and I get less spray in my face. Also they werer easier to cut with the pullsaw I had with me than round cutouts. It's a little lighter now and the weight is okay. Good. |

whadda ya think?
i have been toying with the idea of taking my trusty jaime youngblut and wrapping it in paper and duct tape, so the tape wont stick to the board. and checking it as so. just the board, out of the bag, fins and straps off, just the board, taped from stem to sterm.
surely with a width of 1/4-1/2 inch it would meet the beancounters' criteria?!
harness and bar in luggage, i usually bring my 2 go to kites in my carry on. minimal clothes, no razor unless my lady is coming along.
think it would "fly"? |

It says linear inches not dimensional inches.
So as long as it is under 62 inches long it can go.
I've never had any trouble traveling with just a board in a single board bag.
i.e. a very small width bag fit to very close to the dimensions of the board.
Just take off all fins and pads, you can even fit a 2 nd board in. AT least on the 135 dakine square bag and my 133cm board.
How come only the U.S. and Myanmar are the only countries in the world still using
the english measuring system and not metric? |

It depends on what agent you get. I've had them whip out their little measuring tapes before, make me take stuff out for 2 lbs overage, and been bilked for $450 because I had more than one board in the bag (bags were overweight but charges should've been $150 at the time, not $450!). I've also had them just throw it on the carasol with no hassles as long as it weighed 50 lbs or under. Board bags and golf bags.
I fear they are really going to crack down on the rules and nickel and dime us to death as long as fuel prices remain where they are today. _________________ Marina

Hauled my gear to Dallas TX on Monday using American. Two bags, suit case and big NSI Pro bag, no questions asked, no hassles at all. BTW kited all afternoon at a sweet spot on Lake Ray Hubbard called Dalrock. Big grass area for setup and is also used for landboard/buggy. Launch is rocky but air is so smooth it’s easy to deal with. Air temp is about 90 water temp is about 70, very, very nice. Hope to do it again tomorrow. _________________ My kite not pink it's magenta damit! |

Haven't had a chance to look at American's website on this yet. I'm guessing that other posters interpetation of 62 linear inches is correct, but that's a guess. I'll try and look at it here in the next day or two. Right now I'm covered in glue fixing an ankle seal on my drysuit. (Trying to fix anyway, this is my first go at this stuff. ) |
