Hey has anyone ever done the drive from La Ventana / La Paz, Baja, Mexico to South Padre Island / Brownsville, Texas thru mainland Mexico? We're about to do the drive and were wondering if anyone if anyone had any tips to getting thru the country.

I've driven but going the other way thru mainland mex. At least from Tucson to Punta San Carlos starting in mex around puerto penasco.

It is very pretty when you get into the high mountains in northern mex, but I would not do it again. Many checkpoints where they stop and inspect you. Corrupt cops that want bribes.

I would just go straight for the border and start for TX from CA

Nah, its just the closest 40-50 miles streching along the US border thats really really really really bad.

Must be lotsa illegal activity happening along there. The rest of Mex south of there is mostly cool if you don't attract alot of attention to yourself

Ack!!!

a much better idea might be to get on the ferry that runs between either la paz or loreto to Guaymas, then you could shoot straight up to I-10 with no hassles of any checkpoints or bad people at all .

The Mexican Camping book by Church&Church is very helpful

Hey Shannon, I have done it, tell me which way you are going to go, it is all good, the pass depending on which ferry you take, going from maztilon into mainland is alittle rough, it takes almost 5 hours, looking at the map, it looks super short, no big deal but it is hard, after that it is really pretty good, until the border towns, feels sketch again, I did it solo and had no problems, take the toll road, for sure, it gets spendy but worth it!! Let me know what your route is and I may be able to help more, see you in Padre, Laura
