Fri Mar 14, 08 10:20 am Just back from the trip of a lifetime |
|

Well, we’ve been back for a little over two weeks now and with the arrival of March’s bills, reality has been setting in. I really don’t want to talk about that though; I’d rather tell you about our trip.
A few years ago I made a deal with my wife. She wanted a kid, I wanted to go back to Baja and hang out in the middle of nowhere and wait for the waves. So I put all of my cards on the table and said: alright babe, I’m gonna take you to Mexico and nock you up. The results of that portion of the mission are top secret so I’ll tell you about the rest.
We left PDX on the first of the year bound for Southern Baja; this was to be our fourth trip to the peninsula. After 5 long days of driving, we finally reach our destination on the Pacific. We took off the camper and set up shop for a one month stay at point break with several other surfers (many of which I have met in years past).
The whole reason I started kiting in 2006 was in anticipation of a return to Baja. On my previous trip, the wind was relentless, f-ing up the waves every day and making my life miserable. I vowed that I would not return until I was a proficient kiter. My intent was to surf all morning and kite all afternoon every day. As luck would have it, the wind didn’t blow much at all for the entire month of January. I only kited one day in the Pacific on my entire trip. The surf was epic though and I surfed my brains out on some of the best waves of my life.
At the beginning of February, we left the Pacific for an East Cape tour. If you are ever in Baja with nothing do, I highly recommend driving the loop before it is overdeveloped. It is a great place to hang out on the beach, fish, drink, eat and if your lucky the wind will blow or a southern-hemi swell will light up the points or both. On our route, we came around from Los Cabos from the south and hooked north along the wash-board road until it spits you out near Los Barriles. I don’t care if I spelled the name wrong because that place is lame. We went strait to La Ventanta.
Ah La Ventana. What a cool place. Compared to our previous camping situation on the ocean, this place was plush; flush toilets, hot showers, walk to internet, walk to the restaurants, etc. We were stoked. My goals were to learn: back-rolls, kite-loops in transition and how to land big airs hot with out eating shit. The wind really nuked most days when we were there and the swell got kinda big. I didn’t learn shit except how to deal with gusts and bust big airs; I scared the shit out of myself a few times. Sorry, can you say “shit” on the forum? Anyway, we had a blast at that place and it was really tough to leave.
We got home at the end of February and returned to the job of being good Americans. I am already planning my next trip even though I won’t be able to pull off two months for a couple of years. I am super stoked for the 2008 season in Oregon. PDXmonkeyboy says that my legs still look like Kate Moss, but they feel strong enough to get back on the water soon, when it warms up.
On the subject of getting back to reality and shameless self-promotion, if anyone needs someone to do the flowers for their wedding (my wife) or a real estate broker (me), please send me a PM.
Cheers, Drew

| PDXMB, I guess you missed the part where I said that the results from that part of the mission were still top secret. Its okay, we've been telling everyone anyway.

Yeah, I did't want to leave, but my wife informed me one day that we were leaving tomorrow.
Give and take.
And here is another cool cow pic for Gman
