FIRST EVER OREGON PROFESSIONAL SURF EVENT FINALLY CALLED

December 7, 2005 For immediate release

Lincoln City, OR – The first annual Nelscott Reef Tow-In Contest will be held Sunday December 11th, 2005. Organizers, Behemoth, LLC, run by John Forse, Roland Hoyle and Jim Kusz, decided today to call an official opening to the Nelscott Reef Tow-In Contest, just one week before the end of the contest period, October 15 – December 15, 2005.

As of Thursday, December 1st exclusive contest co-sponsor Action Sports Northwest (actionsportsnw.com) reported “there is a large system forecast to develop in the Pacific that should push some long period, large swell our way. The swell is still about ten days out, but it has good potential so far.”

Contest status was then moved from red alert to yellow to signify the impending weather system and surf conditions.

“It’s been a bit nerve-wracking, we’ve been working on this contest for 4 months and the past 6 weeks have been a nail-biter. But I spoke today with John Forse, the contest founder, and we’re set for the start of the contest this coming weekend in Lincoln City at Nelscott Beach,” said Adam Wagner, President of Action Sports Northwest (actionsportsnw.com)

Today, the status was turned to green. The rush is on for competitors to get to the beach for the contest start time of 8AM on Sunday December 11th. The list of competitors, by invitation only, includes the world’s best big wave tow-in surfers including Peter Mel, Jeff Clark, and Mike Parsons, battling it out for the $20,000 purse. There will be an event headquarters located on the cliff above Nelscott Reef and directly overlooking the break. There will be an area for media to shoot from and several sponsors will have booths set up. The contest will be followed by a dinner and award ceremony, also open to the public, at the Chinook Winds Casino’s Lakeside Golf Club.

The contest is Oregon surfing’s first ever professional competition. The reef was discovered in 1995 by Oregon surfer and contest founder John Forse. Forse attempted to paddle into a huge breaking wave about 1/2 mile offshore from Lincoln City. He wasn't able to catch the wave, but the quest had begun. Ten years later, the wave has been successfully ridden, but only with the assistance of high-powered wave runners.

There is continuous webcam coverage provided by actionsportsnw.com, aimed at the break – go to www.actionsportsnw.com/nelscottreef <http://www.actionsportsnw.com/nelscottreef> during daylight hours PST.

The announcement and contest kicks off the hard launch of Action Sports Northwest’s surfing section, the first of many Action Sports to be covered. Based in Lake Oswego, OR, www.actionsportsnw.com is an Action Sports reporting web service, providing surf reports, long-range forecasts and news from Northern California through British Columbia, beach by beach. Unique features include customized reports and data by sport, webcam coverage, surf conditions and more.

Snowboarding/Skiing, Kiteboarding/Windsurfing, Skateboarding, and Wakeboarding will all be added within the next year.

Here's a photo from yesterday - conditions were similar today for the contest, although not as consistent Would've been nice if it was bigger, but on the sets, there was impressive surfing going on.

That's gotta be the smoothest water I've ever seen on our coast, along with cleanest waves... It'd be awesome water for kiting (if there was wind), though I've never seen conditions like that around here! Wink

Here's the last update from the website:

Quote:
12/12/2005 - Contest is complete.

The first annual Nelscott Reef Tow In Contest was held in near perfect conditions. We had 12' swell hold steady all day with sunny skies and light offshore winds. The hour long final was very close - less than a point seperated the top 3 places. Our congratulations go out to the winners - Zach and Jake Wormhoudt. Second Place winners were Shane Desmond and Tyler Fox. Third Place went to Peter Mel and Anthony Tashnick. Taking fourth was Jeff Clark and Mike Brummett.
Richard Schmidt was awarded the K38 MVP award for best driver of the contest - nominated and voted on by all contestants.

Thanks to Behemoth for putting on such a great event. At the awards ceremony, they announced next years event with the same contest window - Oct. 15th - December 15th. Invites will go out early next year.
