Fri Feb 29, 08 12:05 pm Snowboarding question? |
|
|
| Been a skier for 30 years, but have never been on a snowboard. I just got a kite specific snowboard and am stoked to try snowkiting. Any advice on how to start would be appreciated. Should I go to the mountain and get the feel of snowboarding first? Do you think my intermediate board skills from kiteboarding will crossover to snowboarding at all? Thanks! |

Get a lesson!
Nah, j/k Mike! lol I wouldn't even worry about going to the mountain with the snowboard. You know how to ride, and snowkiting has much more of a kiteboarding feel as apose to REAL snowboarding. Just my $0.02 though.
Didn't wanna try snowkiting with skis, eh? |

I agree there is no reason to spend your' money on a lift ticket, save it for the doctor bills. |

Mike,
If you are a good skiier, why not start snowkiting on ski's?

I love skiing, but it just seems more natural to kite with a board? I don't really know. Don't let Joanne know I could have tried it without buying a board! She'd kill me!
Thanks for the advice everybody! |

The snowboard was much more natural feeling for me with the kite. Especially if the snow is kind of heavy.
Nak, it's just like your twin tip - you should be fine right off the bat.
Speaking of....who thinks Dalles mtn. might get a few inches this weekend? Possibly ridable Sunday morning?

| Snowboards make more sense till the wind dies and you are far from the car. |

I was not sure what would be better either skis or snowboard until last weekend in Idaho. Here is the rundown:
1. If the wind is light and/or the snow is not powder ride the skis.
2. If it is windy, powdery and smooth with good terrain, ride the board.
I used my snowboard last weekend when it was light and wished I was on the skis. The next day I took my telemark skis and was glad I did. With the skis you can move around and they don't rob as much power from the kite. The only wierd thing is jumping with skis......actually the jump is ok, it's the landing that is different. I imagine that with more time I will get used to it.
Some things to consider if you go into the backcountry........
don't go alone, take a pair of skins and backcountry poles if on skis, take some snowshoes if on the board. Bring water, you will get thirsty and hot.
If any of you havn't been snowkiting yet, it is very fun! The hills are amazing! You can ride the ridges and then go downhill at mach speed and ride up the next ridge like a huge superpipe. The wind changes with the terrain, at one moment your feel like you have no power at all, then you go down into a flat and feel lit. After a while you figure out how to navigate around with the terrain to get more or less wind.
Take the drive to the (7.5 hour drive from the gorge)Camas Prarie in Idaho, stay in Fairfield and hook up with Monty from Snowkitesoldier. He will tell you where to go on any given day. He watches the weather like we do here in the Gorge/Coast.
About 2 weeks ago I went to Dalles Mountain and tried snowkiting for the first time. When I was done, I wasn't sure what the hype was about. Now that I have been to Idaho and rode with my teles, I am a believer! Maybe someday I will get a powder day with my snowboard and get to experience that too....... |

Now your just missing a good split board and your set.
It was nice to be on ski's starting out. You can move around better with the skis.
Has anyone hit Baker City or La Grande area yet? Seems like it is always windy when I drive through there. And it is half the distance, at least. |

I would do your skiis if your a newbie. Flopping around on the snowboard is a bit more of a pain in the arse in powder. after a session then try the snowboard.
ps a split board sits way in the back seat for big gun powder runs so not so good for going switch. unless you made the spit board with a regular board.
skiis are the smartest and safest option for moving around if the wind dies or gear fails. |

I would add snowkiting can be fairly easy or really hard depending on conditions. even for experienced snowboarders in great shape, two tacks and your out of breath if its really deep.
I'd go with skis until you get the hang of it. Plenty of guys out there demonstrated that skiing works great for snowkiting. |
