I used to be into cameras. I have some really old stuff that I inherited from my dad and used to play with a lot but I stopped when all the digital stuff started coming out. Our darkroom burnt to the ground in a thunderstorm in 2000 and I couldn't afford a digital camera so I just stopped being creative.

Anyway I can afford one now. I have some really old Nikon/Nikkor lenses, so I would like to buy a Nikon camera. I am looking at the D40x but If it was really truly worth the extra money I may be able to sell my soul and get the D300. Any of you have any experience with either of these cameras?

I also have an old Vivitar Series 1 70-210 Macro Zoom lens that is the first one made by kiron. I would very much like to be able to use this lens. It's a funky mount but I've heard you can do it, but you just have to use it manually. Has anyone ever done this? I don't mind shooting manually because that's all I've ever really done. I also have some other lenses that would be nice to be able to use including an AF Nikkor lens, another Vivitar macro lens and a 24mm Nikkor lens.

If any of you made it this far thanks. I've really enjoyed the badass pics on this website and you guys have inspired me to get back into shooting.

Andy

I use my old AI/'d lenses on my D70. Some lenses are NOT compatable with the digital bodies though. What film camera are you using? I went from a FM to a D70s with little problems. Check this out before mounting the lens to the camera because it could damage the body. I would goto Nikon's site for compatibility.

If they need to be converted to AI, you can get the rings on line. I did this with a 55mm 1.2 I got for $20!

FYI, don't use older flashes with a digital camera. The can damage the camera body due to voltage changes! You can buy an adapter for ~$20. It's a common question in the photo mags.

I still need to get a housing to get the good shots with my rig Laughing

I have a couple non-kiting friends with D40x's and they take some nice pics, but they also feel really small (and kind of cheap). If I were you, I'd look into a D80 or D200 (assuming you want to go the Nikon route). I still shoot with an old D70, but because I don't do a lot of stuff for print, I'm fairly sure I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

Shot a Nikon D2Xs in SPI when we were doing the Slingshot photoshoot, and that's the most insane cam I've ever held!

I've got a Nikon D100 Body and a few decent lenses that I've been meaning to sell if you were into going that route. Still takes nice shots and was what got me into digital. I jumped over to Canon last year.

LMK if you have any interest.
