Hello,

Planning on checking out Dalles Mt. tomorrow and was wondering if any one could recommend a site to check road conditions up there. Any and all recommendations about the place are welcome.

Thanks

S

There is probably no snow, we were there on Wednesday and the snow was marginal, it is a lot warmer now, The road is also bad in spots, lots of mud some deep. great spot though!

I was up today to check it out but no snow. Very small patches you could mow the lawn a few times but not worth the hike down in the mud. The road is better but definitely 4x4 to be safe. I then drove to a spot between Goldendale and Glenwood about 30 miles Northeast that had good coverage. I was on a 10 fully powered but gusty.

was that on the Yakima reservation? It sounds like there isn't much terrain west of the cascades.

Hey Sella...

Where was the spot you were at?? Seems like there would be a lot of spots up there just waiting to be explored.

Was it off of 142?

Yep totally off of 142 almost 10 miles west of Goldendale. The spot I found is still in question because of a tree line that contributed to the gust but Pepi emailed me last week he has a few spots he wants to go search before he got crazy sick. (Get well Peparino!)

We "believe" the Northern area behind White Salmon heading East towards Goldendale could be choice. Wind Slither has been killing Dalles Mtn lately but the snow coverage comes and goes so you have to be quick.

We are on a quest to find an area that maintains good coverage within 50 miles of HR so we don't have to stay overnight. It would hopefully be something similar to what Sol Flyer is tapping every other day in Southern with a nice flat area, some elevation to play on and minimal to no hike in. We will find the secret snow spot.....it's just a matter of time and a big ass wad of cash and free kite lessons to the farmer that owns it. Twisted Evil

last year was my first snowkiting season....I can tell you that some places look good, but just dont work, Other places may be good, but take a lot of trial and error. (like the hwy 140 "flats")

So when scouting out new terrain, look for any wide open area,...fields/flats/open slopes. Make sure to check wind direction in relation to location. also might want to check property rights. dont need a huge area, something the size of a football field works.

Here is a link to the Wunderground Google map:

i found this to be really helpful, you can check out the Topo., then turn over to satellite image and look for other obstructions(trees)

Good luck, and i hope you guys find some killer spots!. I didnt realize how fortunate i am to get in all this snowkiting....I've already learned a few new tricks and feel good about my progression...really learn a lot when you kite all year round.
