I drove up there this afternoon, just to check it out. It was my first time up there, it looks like a fun spot. The wind was decent (10-15), but not enough snow...only a few inches.

Also I couldn't drive up very high. The first gate was open where you turn left into the preserve, but the second gate was locked. I walked up the road a half mile or so before I could see the radio towers. I kept going a ways to see if the snow was better up high, but there definitely wasnt enough to ride on. Although it was snowing while I was up there, so maybe you'll have enough tomorrow.

Is that the way you're supposed to go? The map I looked at looks like you're supposed to continue to the right past the preserve.

forrest is right..

you go up and stay right....then you can wrap up to the top until you see the radio tower.

Oops, I guess I did make a wrong turn. Well that's good to know, that was my first time up there. Although it looks like the road into the preserve goes up over 3000 feet (if only it were open), but the other road doesn't look like it goes much higher than 2200 feet.

It might be good up there right now, if they got enough new snow. There's definitely some wind.

Here's a picture of the Columbia Hills from the NE looking toward Mt Hood. This is from today Dec 31st 2007. Sorry the quality isn't great, but that's what I have for a picture.
Dalles Mtn is below and to the left of Hood and Stacker Bute is below and to the right of Hood.
It looks Like Stacker has more snow on it than Dalles Mtn, but it is also harder to get to.
I haven't been up there lately so I don't now the snow depth.

Mike

I went up to Dalles Mtn today to check it out. There was about 3-4 inches of snow in the field to the east of the radio tower.

The snow was about twice that deep in the gully to the south of the radio tower, and it looked like somebody had been riding on the side of the south gully recently. The south gully looks like it would take an E to ESE wind pretty good.

Wind was light ENE when I got there and switched to NE and a little stronger just before I left.

Anybody know how to get to the 2nd radio tower that's higher up the mountain and to the WNW of the 1st radio tower (its near the peak in the center of the 1st picture)? The snow didn't really even start to accumulate until you get to the 1st tower and the 2nd tower looks quite a bit higher up.
