Podcast #91:

This week, The Kiteboarder Magazine and ASNews.net host Ryan Riccitelli will interview Matt Sexton, a junior at Eckerd College in Florida. Matt has been leading the collegiate kiteboarding club and competition scene and started one of the first college kiteboarding clubs in the US in 2005. His Club has grown from a few friends to over 200 and produced six IKO/PASA instructors as well. Matt has helped 12 other colleges around the US set up their own kitesurfing clubs and is working toward establishing regional circuits across the country where schools will compete against each other throughout the season for the chance to claim bragging rights at a final championship. His vision is for college kiteboarding to be as well known and established as college sailing.

Matt is a cool guy. Mad props to him for getting the college circuit off the ground. I organized a small kiteboarding club as part of the windsurfing club in college a few years ago until we started getting noticed by the local shops/authorities a little (they're super territorial about what kite school gets to teach at what beach in the SF bay area). Then the windsurfers (lead by a dick that even the other windsurfers disliked) politely asked us to get the hell out of their club so we don't involve their club in potential liability issues. The same guy also told us their were keeping the money we brought to the club since it doesn't even cover the gear we purchased (which was complete BS as confirmed later by the treasurer). When I tried starting a separate kiteboarding club we showed up on the radar and the Risk Management group happily declined my application saying the liability to the university was too high without mentioning any specifics that I could dispute. As my club was dying in '06 Matt was nice enough to offer advice. I have lots of respect for him knowing the shit he had to go through to get this thing off the ground. Glad that he made it on asnews and is getting more exposure.

By the way they also declined another student's application to start a surf club. WTF??? If anyone has any ideas on sticking it to the man I'm all ears.

that's probably one of the radest thing i've heard of in a while. that's really cool that there's a collegiate circiut seting up. Sounds like somthing that could go onto the colligiate nationals on cstv, i mean they have flowboarding on it.
