20 inches of SNOWFALL OVERNIGHT!
Single biggest 24 hour SNOWFALL
for early October in recorded history
Mt.Baker Ski Area received 20 inches of new snowfall last night. This is the single biggest amount of snow to fall in 24 hours this time of year in recorded history at Baker. It is currently 30 degrees and STILL SNOWING.
With preliminary forecasts recognizing a La Nina winter weather pattern forming, it appears that this might be the first signs of the POWDER SEASON skiers and snowboarders may be infor this year!
In winter's with a slightly colder than normal temperatures, such as La Nina years, skiers and snowboarders can expect colder, dryer snow which means MORE POWDER days.
The last time a significant La Nina affected Mt. Baker was in the World Record Winter of 1998-99. Mt. Baker received 1,140 inches of snowfall that year.
Mt. Baker typcially is the first ski area to open in the Northwest and on average opens in mid November.
