Thu Sep 20, 07 7:35 am I suggest we do the following... |
|
|
Due to recent posts and threads I suggest we do the following:
1. Subscriptions: Cancel all subscriptions to kiteboard magazines, because they promote kiteboard beaches, provide pictures of them, directions to locations, best wind directions to ride them, and what time of year to ride there.
2. Search Engine: Do not support or use any internet search engine, as they have the ability to search on words like "Kite" and "beaches" Why support a company that can promote your spot?
3. Geo-Software: Do not use Google Earth, or any other Geo-mapping software, as this supports the continuation of people being able to look for kiteboard spots on the earth. If we all stop using it, maybe they will stop making the software.
4. Pictures: Do not post any pictures of places you have been recently, as this will just spread the "Word" about other potential launch spots.
5. Verbal Comms: Do not talk about what you did this weekend to anyone that does not already ktieboard unless they are in your "Friend Circle", as this may allow more Kooks into the sport. Imaging if someone overheard you talking about riding at spot X..they may show up there tomorrow and ruin your next session.
6. Travel: Do not travel anywhere outside a 50 mile radius of where your primary residence is, as this just makes the "local" spot more crowded. This includes vacations to any spots where you can kiteboard. And you can no longer take your kite gear on vacations as this will just crowd someone else’s spot. Keep it local, please!
7. Airlines: Do not fly any airline that allows Kiteboard equipment on their flights, or flies to any destination where there could be a kiteboard spot, as this just makes that spot more crowded. It is OK to fly somewhere as long an you follow rule 6.
8. Media:Do not share your stoke of the sport with pictures and/or videos with anyone else outside of your kiteboarding friend circle. And its not a posted to a public area and transmitted across a public medium, like the internets. Someone else might see them, and think that is the best place in the world to ride. Videos of you riding may show up on YouTube and then everyone will know about that awesome spot you've been hiding.
10: Forums/Web Sites: Do not support your local kite forums or any other kite forum, as this just allows kooks to get more information about this sport. Or any website that talks or discusses anything about lcoations like kitebeaches.com..come on, they have 3768 beaches in 163 countries already. Image if a Kook knew about this place.
11. Windsurfers: Blame windsurfers why your area is so crowded, because 30 years ago they discovered your spot and told people about these spots.
Following these simple rules we can keep these places less crowded, and kook free. Thank you. _________________ Keep it Simple and local! |

Maybe we should just do a poll. Do people like seeing photo's or not and then we could put a end to this stupid subject and move on. _________________ Join the CGKA! Membership is only $10! Sign up at http://cgka.net/become-a-member/ |

may i suggest
you narrow the radius down to 5 miles for local spots - in fact you should walk to your local spot - up hill in the snow
add
12. Don't design/produce any kitesurfing gear. It just makes is easier for others.
13. Don't move to a windy spot, you'll just make it more crowded.
14. Don't tell windsurfers how lame their sport is and how wonderful kitesurfing is.
15. Don't teach anyone to kite.
16. Constantly talk about how dangerous it is and you nearly died several times.
17. Only kite at night, with a black kite and black lines. Black face paint is optional. Extra points if you kite 100 miles from anyone
18. Never call a friend and tell them it is windy
19. Don't have any friends.
20. If you have to kite where people can see you, don't make look like it is any fun. A constant scowl helps this affect. No air or tricks and constantly getting tea bagged with a swim in with knotted lines at the end is always a nice touch.

Now that's what we should hand out at the port parking booths.
I know I've been guilty of most (but thankfully, not all) of those.
But I'm trying to change.
and you can too. |

My vote:
Share the Stoke! - Post the Photos! It's a beautiful sport to watch and look at - why try to hide it. I want to see people having fun. Makes me all warm and fuzzy feeling.
Seriously, I do not understand how pictures of 10 guys having fun at Rufus one weekend is going to ruin Rufus. Say the post gets a 1000 views. We know that 500 of those are from the same people just checking in to see the latest comment and the original crew that went there enjoying what happened. So - maybe there are 500 views from "lurkers", or dirt City Slickers, or cheap Canadians , or Southern Californians, or (gasp!) East Coasters! Of those 500 how many are actually going to plan a trip to Rufus next weekend or even next summer? 20? 50? How many will actually show up on the exact same day that you make your annual pilgrimage to the rocks? 5? Is Rufus ruined because of 5 or 10 extra kiters one weekend?
Keeping people ignorant is not the way to improve the sport. Solid, reliable information will do more to improve the sport than trying to keep the "wrong" people out. Use the tools that exist to educate people. All of the magazines are putting in articles on safety and how to's. There are gear guides and location information. Ikitesurf has all of the ride spot info for FREE. This forum and others should be a place to learn about the sport, ask questions, find information and it doesn't hurt to share our pictures of what's going on.
I'd rather promote the image to the general public/wanna-be-kiters/visitors, that the Gorge/NW kiters have it together, we know our sites, we we self police for safety and courtesy, we educate, and we have fun. Basically a new person should be able to get the impression, through what ever source they go to, that they need to understand how to be safe, how to kite in crowds and in general how things work out here before they show up for the first time. Those sources can be magazines, signs, flyers at the beaches, word of mouth, iKitesurf, and this forum.
But, if you do run into a complete idiot who needs some deterrence this is probably the best way....

I thought the whole idea of a site like this was to promote the sport of kiteboarding, by providing useful information for others, as well as sharing the stoke.
To me, the unnecessary drama created here is not really worth it.
Most of the time I can "turn the channel". It must be harder for others to do that.
That's unfortunate.
I understand nwkite users can be stuck behind thier computers (tied to a 9 to 5) and feel they need to contribute to this site on every topic.
I know I'm not helping by replying to this post but I felt compelled to chime in.
I just wanted to suggest focusing your energy on the positive vibes of this sport.
