My husband and I are planning a 4 day kiteboarding trip with our kids in November. We are trying to decide between La Ventana and South Padre Island, TX. Which is better (especially since we have two young boys)?

Thanks!

Baja is more the mid winter place, SPI better for Fall/Spring. February probably still Baja.

Early to mid November I think the wind is better in SPI plus there is more to do when the wind isn't blowing. Mid to late Nov. it's probably a toss up. Dec, Jan, Feb, LV definitely has the edge.

We had a blast last year in SPI from Nov 15th onward - heard it was even better earlier in the month. We've also been to LV for Thanksgiving and it rocked as well. Both lots of fun!

dead of winter is very cold in SPI. about half the time
Dec-Jan.
LV. would probably be warmer and less downtime

SPI in Spring and Fall - More consistent front/storm winds both north and south
LAV in winter - It gets the desesrt thermals.

Teenage boys in SPI during down time - Internet access, cell phones , shopping, movie theaters etc. basic usa beach town stuff.

Teenage and all boys in LaV during down time - Drink beers as no drinking age limit and very cheap beers, actually communicate face to face as no cell phones, limited or slow internet, not even a store larger than a half stocked convenience store unless you go to LaPaz 45 minutes away. Its a great time, but you have to prepeare them for the more remote layed-back lifestyle. Bring as much toys or games as you can.

A few of us have gotten the super skunkage in late October / November ... but I have also heard of it going off for weeks on end in that period. Lots of "you should have been here last week" and "it was windy everyday except the 10 days when you were here"

One trip we got 2 sessions in 10 days... if you have ever been to SPI you know how brutal that must have been. There is not enough entertainment on that island for 10 hours much less 10 days. Get drunk and watch CNN, that's what we did anyway.

BTW - Make sure you hit Naturally's for sandwiches. Last time we were there it was in the strip mall next to the Howard Johnson, but I think they were just about to move.

Best sandwiches in the world hands down.
