Villa Prea is a great place. Tell Fred and Rob that Jim from the Gorge said hello. There are MUCH better places to kite south of Prea. Be sure to hit Mandeau, Paracuru and Pecem if you want some waves. Caponga south of Forteleza is a pretty cool place. Only lagoon I found that you can ride through the river outlet into the ocean, ride some waves, then ride back into the lagoon for some premium butter. The pasada at the Caponga lagoon is worth a nights stay. You gotta hit it when high tide is forcasted for 3 PM, then hope for wind!

Nice shots! Looks like an awesome spot. So how did you fly there - through Manaus - how long door to door.

dcrowe,

You should see if you can get one of the guys to take you into Jeri for a night. Good restaurants (but no where near Villa Prea if the chef from Sao Palo is still there), outstanding night life. By far the best fresh fish I had in 3 months of living on the beach up and down the coast in Brazil was at Villa Prea. How about those breakfasts? Check out the lagoons near Prea. I never rode on them but I had other friends say they were good. Watching all the euro dudes windsurf on the crowded point break in Jeri with their euro gals on the beach was a little entertaining. Probably where you took that picture for stormrider !

Hey Shredjim,

I got some friends going to the Northern Brazil area in mid November. I want to go with them, but don't wanna spend that much money for a 10 day trip. I'm considering going a week or two early, but don't speak Portuguese or know where to stay, how to get around, etc. Based on your experience would you recommend that someone head down there alone for a week or two? Is it pretty easy to meet up with other kiters? If so, any advice on places to stay for relatively cheap where my gear will be safe?

Also, have you been to Florianopolis and would you say it's worth a visit for the waves? How's the wind down there in November?

Anyone else headed to Brazil in November?

Thanks a lot.

Hey Genek,

Brazil is all in what you make of it. Sure it is easy to meet kiters in the Forteleza area ie Cumbuco because that is kite central. I was there for 2 weeks with friends in the beginning then 2.5 months by myself. Being by yourself forces you to get into the culture more and meet new friends. Brazil is very cool in that regard because there are MANY european people there on holiday - and they go for a month. Some Brazilians speak english, but most don't. In the resorts the employees do because they have to at least a little. They can understand cave man Spanish better than english but will laugh at you. In 05-06 there were not many americans there because of having to take such a long flight through Rio or Sao Paulo, which from the west coast USA was about 31 hours including layovers in Atlanta and Rio. Rental cars are expensive and there are not so cool check points every so often in the remote areas so I always took the bus. A bit of a hastle with the ball and chain kitebag. Having chased the wind most of my life, Brazil is the best for wind in the world IMO. People are cool, food not so great, a fabulous place to kiteboard, but a bit on the dangerous side! Plan your travel and movements to/from your hotels to restaurants etc. at night carefully, or you will get held up at gunpoint for sure. Use strong third world travel strategy and you will be fine. I did not make it down to Florianopolis, unfortunately.
