Good move on wanting lessons. I would suggest you make the trek to Hood River. More consistent wind and more experienced kite instructors. There are a few guy that offer "underground" kite lessons at Sauvies but the wind is so inconsistent that it ussusally won't happen or will only be marginal winds. Some of my "underground" lessons I now realize were not as safe as those I recieved from kite schools, equipment was not as good (making it much harder) and did not have watercraft support. Make the trip to HR and make it often, you will not regret it and if your going to kite it will become familiar - Guaranteed! I also live in Hillsboro and would be willing to carpool if your interested, would be cool to know another kiter in Hillsboro.
Also, fly a trainer all you can!

Diggy is absolutely correct. I looked into both options this year and found jet ski assist a faster way to learn and knowing that you have a fairly good chance of having wind for your lesson. Start reading about the wind window and practice with your trainer- the better you are with the trainer, the faster you will learn to keep a big kite in the air. _________________ MS |

a good adjunct to lessons, not to be confused with a SUBSTITUTE for same, is the realkitebording dvd series beginning with zero-to-hero, joyride, etc. really helped me assess launches for safety, figure downwinder safety for haul-out and lter, dial my stance. they are by no means cheap, but i have seen them online and used for a few bucks.
good luck and may the winds be with you, grasshopper.
